This #WorldMigratoryBirdDay we are preparing for a serious and highly contagious strain of bird flu. Each year, around 2 million migratory shorebirds, such as the sharp-tailed sandpiper and far eastern curlew visit Australia’s coastal and inland wetlands. Australia also hosts many millions of seabirds, like the short-tailed shearwater, that utilise our oceans to forage and reproduce during this time of year. These incredible birds are vital to our ecosystems but face growing threats from habitat loss, marine debris, plastic pollution and climate change. Insect decline is also contributing to the loss of migratory birds around the world. In recent years these birds have also faced the threat of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1. Migratory birds share habitats with other native wildlife, increasing the risk of spreading the virus. To help protect our native wildlife we are asking people to: ➡️Check for signs of sick birds in your local area ➡️Avoid contact with sick or dead birds ➡️Report sick or dead birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888 For more information visit: https://brnw.ch/21wNGZ5 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #WetlandsAustralia #BonnConvention #WMBD2024 #EAAFlyway #RamsarConvention @convention-on-wetlands @eaafpartnership

By weaving ghost net wulbung (baskets), master weavers are helping to rid Australian shores of harmful ocean debris and use this plastic in a sustainable way. They are also sharing their traditional knowledge and weaving wulbung skills with new generations to ensure these traditions continue. The #GlobalNaturePositiveSummit was proud to display more than 70 of these beautiful ghost net baskets to visiting delegates from all over the world this week. Agency Projects, in support of the Numbulwar Numburindi Arts, has generously facilitated collection of the ghost net baskets featured in the Summit installation. Hear from Agency Projects CEO Kade McDonald ⬇️ Find out more about this installation and its nature positive impact ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWnC__AE

Shout out to the Australian War Memorial for launching their new geothermal energy system 👏 It uses the near constant temperature of the ground beneath the Memorial throughout the year as a source of heating in the summer and cooling in the winter ☀️❄️ It is the largest closed loop #geothermal system in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Memorial is proud to launch our new Geothermal energy system. The renewable energy source uses Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) to tap into the near constant temperature of the ground throughout the year as a source for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. As the largest closed loop geothermal system in the Southern Hemisphere, it will replace current gas and electric boilers with a 100% renewable energy source. Not only will it significantly reduce the Memorial’s operating costs, it will more importantly eliminate 1 million kilograms of CO2 each year. That’s the equivalent of transporting 87,500 students a year from Sydney to Canberra return to visit the Australian War Memorial carbon free. #Sustainability

Taking action against deadly ghost nets 🕸️🐟 Abandoned, lost and discarded fishing nets – known as #GhostNets – pollute marine environments worldwide. Our marine life and habitats are significantly harmed by their presence. To help protect our ocean and wildlife from the risks associated with ghost nets, we are: 🎣 joining the Global Ghost Gear Initiative 🎣 contributing $1.4 million toward regional action on ghost nets. The action plan will help address ghost nets in the Arafura and Timor Seas. This is one of the many ways we are working with global partners, including Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, to address our shared environmental priorities. Offshore wind projects in Bunbury can’t be built yet. Interested companies need to apply for ‘feasibility’ licences so they can undertake environmental assessments and technical investigations inside the declared zone. This can take up to 7 years. ⏱️ Feasibility licence applications in the Bunbury offshore wind area close 3 December 2024. Successful projects will require ongoing monitoring and compliance under management plans overseen by the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator. Read more 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wNA7v
