Delivering a diverse range of specialist transport services to empower thriving communities in Western Australia.

About us

The Department of Transport is the lead agency for strategic transport policy, planning and investment in Western Australia. Together with our portfolio partners – Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority – we keep people and freight moving through an intricate system of roads, railways, airports, ports, shared paths and waterways. With more than 1,500 employees we have the expertise to provide and enable safe, accessible and efficient movement for the economic and social prosperity of Western Australia. Our dedicated teams of transport professionals provide integrated transport planning for moving people and freight in metropolitan and regional Western Australia and develop strategic transport policy in the fields of maritime, aviation, bike riding and walking and land transport. We are committed to creating opportunities for Indigenous individuals and businesses to share in the delivery of projects across the Transport Portfolio and, as an agency, support assisting disadvantaged people in remote areas of our State to obtain their drivers licence and gain access to employment and other social and economic opportunities. Our customer-focused frontline staff also deliver a range of transport services to the community including licensing functions for people, vehicles and vessels; regulating Western Australia’s on-demand taxi industry; developing and managing coastal infrastructure; keeping people safe in and around the water and administering a range of transport grants and subsidies. Our vision is to have the best integrated and intelligent transport services and solutions for the State, which supports our purpose to empower a thriving community. This work is guided by our core values of Collaboration, Wellbeing, Adaptability and Accountability.

  • A successful dredging campaign at Kalbarri, done! Biennial dredging at the river mouth at Kalbarri has restored channel width and depth, ensuring safe navigation. An added bonus of the work was the deepening of water around a jetty used for swimming and recreation, approved by Marine Rescue Kalbarri because the water is now deep enough for them to tie up there for aquatic events. DoT, and contractors Maritime Constructions and BMT were commended for their professionalism and regular updating of the community. Approximately, 84,000 cubic metres of material was dredged - nearly double the expected volume!

It was fantastic to represent the Department of Transport, Western Australia to discuss WA’s involvement in progressing automated vehicle (AV) reforms at the recent AITPM - Leadership in Traffic and Transport National Transport Conference in Perth. This is a complex but exciting area of transport to be involved in, and it is important that policy-makers keep up with technological progress to ensure AVs can be deployed safely and effectively. WA recently participated in a consultation process led by National Transport Commission to help establish an agreed Australia-wide regulatory approach to the use of AVs on public roads. This is an important first step to building community confidence and understanding the obligations of human AV users/occupants. In the Pilbara, AVs are already being used in a controlled mining environments with great potential to uplift mineral extraction – especially from stranded ore bodies remote from existing infrastructure. Other promising developments in WA include the testbed at Development WA's Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct - where a range of technologies can be tested and NTRO - National Transport Research Organisation / City of Joondalup plans for WA’s own Smart Mobility Living Lab – similar to the one in London, featured in the video below. It’s great to be part of the challenge to work across government and industry to ensure we have the legislation and policy groundwork in place to take advantage of the incredible opportunities AVs present for WA in the future.

  • The first data from seabed mapping targeting erosion hotspots in the Gascoyne and along the southern coast is now available for use in the State Government's multifaceted $33.5 million five-year plan to better manage and protect WA’s coastline. As part of the Coast Capture WA program, the Department of Transport has contracted Fugro, a Geo-data company, to undertake a project to map from Esperance to Barrow Island. The project will provide some key missing pieces to the existing bank of topographic and bathymetric data currently available for the State's coastline and further build the dataset to ensure the most appropriate response measures to erosion are applied. 📷 3D mapping of Ningaloo and Coral Bay. • A significant achievement by our friends at Main Roads Western Australia, with completion of the Tonkin Gap project 👏 Substantial walking and riding infrastructure was delivered as part of these works, now giving our community a safe and continuous route from Mandurah to Muchea! 🚲 Not only does this achievement improve connectivity by completing critical path network gaps, but it had also provided a recreational BMX and mountain bike skills area under the Redcliffe Mooro-Beeloo Bridge and interactive heritage trail, highlighting areas of cultural significance along the way. Find out about the project: https://lnkd.in/gBJMPqBu

🎉 That’s a wrap! The Tonkin Gap Project has officially been completed with motorists enjoying the widened section of Tonkin Highway between Collier Road and Dunreath Drive. In addition to the road works, the Project also delivered: 🌉 8 bridges and 3 footbridges, including over the Swan River and live rail 🚗 Upgrades to the Guildford Road and Great Eastern Highway interchanges 🚲 A Principal Shared Path with 7 bridges, 3 underpasses, 3 footbridges and local connections for cyclists and pedestrians 🚆 Two dive structures to facilitate the railway entering and exiting the Tonkin Highway median Much credit must go to the Tonkin Gap Alliance, comprising of BMD, Georgiou Group, WA Limestone, BG&E and GHD, who worked with Main Roads and Public Transport Authority to deliver this great WA project. While there will be a little more disruption as the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line heads towards completion, motorists are now experiencing a much quicker and smoother journey. Check out the completion video of the Tonkin Gap section!

  • Skippers are being asked to take extra care as DoT works to deliver a new 460 metre northern breakwater at Casuarina Boat Harbour in Bunbury. Dredging will commence this week to prepare the construction footprint, prompting a warning for those transiting the harbour during the next three months. ✅ The advice is to keep a good lookout, navigate with caution and when operating near the dredge vessels always make radio contact to ensure it is safe to pass. The radio frequencies are VHF Channel 16 and Channel 12. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmitpVdV South West Development Commission
