Thanks for inviting our CEO, Mary Butterworth, to speak at your symposium, AISWA - Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia on “Developing Easy Read Materials.” Easy Reads are materials designed with simple language, images, and formatting, to make information more accessible to many in our community. Since early 2023, DDWA has conducted workshops for over 500 professionals, including government representatives, public service staff, teachers, and disability service providers, providing an introduction to creating Easy Read documents. As a result, we now see government departments and organisations placing Easy Reads on their home page (website) and in printed form. We continue our commitment to making documents and online materials accessible and suitable for all people.
Last Thursday, our Inclusive Education team proudly hosted the inaugural Inclusive Education Symposium. The day was filled with insightful presentations on a variety of pressing topics in the inclusive education space. Our very own Tania W., IE Consultant, kicked off the event with a compelling presentation on “Disability in the Education Landscape.” Following her, AISWA psychologist Michele Blacklock delivered an engaging session titled “Why is School So Hard for Some and What We Can Do to Support Students.” We were fortunate to have Dr Theresa Kidd, PhD from The Kidd Clinic share her expertise on Pathological Demand Avoidance. Her passion and deep knowledge provided participants with a wealth of research-informed strategies and practical advice to implement in schools. The day concluded with an invaluable presentation by Mary Butterworth, Developmental Disability WA (DDWA), on “Developing Easy Read Materials.” These materials, designed with simple language, images, and formatting, make information more accessible to many in our community. We are already looking forward to hosting the Symposium again in 2025. Thank you to all our speakers and participants for making this event a resounding success.
