There are 5.5 million people living with a disability in Australia. Half of people with disabilities are unemployed. Attitudes need to shift so all people are included and can experience a sense of pride in their journey. The Australian Disability Network has launched a short film and marketing campaign to educate the public about the social model of disability and to encourage employers to create more inclusive workplaces. Diversity in our society requires an inclusive approach to education where all students are included and inspired in their learning journey. Neurodivergent students need to feel supported and teaching needs to be responsive to their abilities. Graham Forbes, featured in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) article, recommends a more flexible approach to learning: "There are many ways you can present information … and there are many ways you can be assessed on how you've absorbed and understood and engaged — and we can present those options in a normal teaching process." #Education #Diversity #Disability #Inclusion #InclusionEducation #Neurodivergence

It is fantastic to see explicit teaching put firmly on the Victorian Department of Education agenda, including a new phonics reading program for early primary school-aged students from 2025. Diverse Thinkers tutoring sessions have led to successful outcomes for a wide variety of students using this model of teaching. Explicit teaching provides a wonderful structure for lessons and enables students to be given clear guidance, feedback and opportunities for real growth.
