Today is R U OK? Day - it's about checking in with those around us—not just today, but every day. It's a simple question that can be the opening to a conversation, one where someone that perhaps isn't travelling too well can open up and talk. In our workshops, we stress the importance of asking, "R U OK?" in various scenarios: - When an employee seems withdrawn or their performance drops - When team dynamics appear off - When a manager or leader seems unusually tired or stressed - When someone’s communication style changes in meetings Whether someone is facing workplace challenges, personal issues, or a tough time in their life, this simple question can make a huge difference. It can open the door to discussions about bullying, pressure, trauma, or simply the difficulties they’re facing. Today, we encourage you to commit to asking, "R U OK?" every day. That small gesture could be the start of a conversation that truly makes a difference. For more information, visit R U OK? #RUOK #CareEveryday #AskAnyDay

A real pleasure to speak at the AFAC24 conference last week around Positive Duty - so much we can continue to do to ensure that everyone is safe, respected and included in our workplaces. #positiveduty #respectatwork

At the AFAC24 conference this week, our panel 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘌𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘋𝘶𝘵𝘺, discussed the essential actions workplaces must take under the Sex Discrimination Act to create safer, more inclusive, and respectful environments. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: • 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 is essential, and leaders need to reflect on what kind of organisations they want to create and how equality is embedded in their operations. • 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of any effort to improve gender equality. Policies are important, but real change comes when respect and equality are central to every decision. • 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀—front-line managers must be part of training, and the policies should be co-designed with individuals who have direct experience with the issues. • 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 are critical for understanding where progress is being made and where challenges persist. People will share if they trust that action will follow. • 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 are key: ongoing training is necessary, and communication about these issues must come from leadership. It's about creating a culture where harmful behaviours, no matter how small, are not normalised. • 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘀, 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺: Ensuring that those raising issues are supported throughout the process, including being clear on confidentiality and the next steps, is crucial. Thank you to our wonderful moderator Erin Liston-Abel MBA GAICD (AFAC), and to our incredible panellists Dr Anna Cody (Australian Human Rights Commission), Commissioner Jeremy Smith AFSM (Tasmania Fire Service), Sally Woolford (Diversity Consulting Inc), and Matthew Longland (Sydney Trains) for sharing their insights and helping us explore the opportunities and challenges of accelerating gender equality across sectors. #GenderEquality #EverydayRespect #Inclusion #AFAC24 #PositiveDuty Kristen Hilton Annika Freyer Caroline Tjoa Onella C. Today is Wear it Purple day - what is that I hear you say?! Wear it Purple was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses. In 2010, several rainbow young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity. One member of this group was 18 year old Tyler Clementi who took his own life after being publicly ‘outed’ as gay by his roommate, prompting a frenzy as reports poured in of various young people sadly in the same situation. As the world saw the faces of precious young lives lost, some young people found a new sense of conviction and purpose to ensure that young people everywhere would know that there were people who did support and love them. Wear it Purple was established to show young people across the globe that there was hope, that there were people who did support and accept them, and that they have the right to be proud of who they are. We strongly believe at Diversify Consulting that everyone deserves to be respected for who they are, who they love and their rights as individuals. https://lnkd.in/fgh9PaX

They say 'silence is golden' or 'silence means agreement' - we agree with Shane Dore - silence most likely is a result of fear for speaking up. Silence is something you should be keeping an eye on. It often links wonderfully to the HIPPO (Highest Paid Person's Opinion) effect where the highest paid person's opinion carries more weight than anybody else's in the room. Explore silence as it may well be an indicator of a culture that isn't quite as positive as you think. #culture #silence #leadership

Uncomfortable truth: silence rarely implies consent. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned as a leader is this: just because no one in the meeting spoke up, shared a different view, or voiced any kind of objection, does not mean they agreed with what was said or decided. Silence in meetings often indicates people don't feel safe, or don't think it's worthwhile, to speak up. So, they stay quiet instead. Mabo Day is marked annually on 3 June. It commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful efforts to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or ‘land belonging to no one’. The Mabo case ran for 10 years and the High Court of Australia decided that terra nullius should not have been applied to Australia. This decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land – rights that existed before the British arrived and can still exist today. The Mabo decision was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, because it acknowledged their unique connection with the land. It also led to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act in 1993. Native title is the legal recognition that some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to, and interests in, certain land because of their traditional laws and customs. Sadly, Eddie Mabo died 5 months before the historic decision came on 3 June 1992 that ‘native title’ did exist and it was up to the people of Mer to determine who owned the land. 📌Learn more about Mabo Day: https://bit.ly/3fzyxlM #Reconciliation #NRW2024 #NowMoreThanEver
