DJAARA and YWCA Australia are proud to break ground on our Burnayi Lurnayi housing development in Bendigo. Burnayi Lurnayi (meaning ‘young women’ in Dja Dja Wurrung language) will provide 35 high-quality homes for women and their families on the Victorian Housing Register, with half of the properties prioritised for First Nations women. Thank you to Victorian Housing Minister Harriet Shing for attending the groundbreaking ceremony today. Funded by Homes Victoria as part of the $5.3 billion Big Housing Build Regional Round and a grant from the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, we look forward to welcoming families in early 2026.

On the 15th October we celebrated our partnership with conservation not-for-profit Bush Heritage Australia by launching a shared plan to guide management of Bush Heritage-managed reserves on Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country) in central Victoria. ⭐️🌱🌞 Both the partnership and plan are a deep commitment to right-way land management and ensure Djaara voices are central to decision making about Djandak. We call our partnership Wurreka Galkangu, which means ‘to yarn, to talk’ and ‘to build together, make things happen together, more connected to Country’ in Dja Dja Wurrung language. https://lnkd.in/guwk-BiU 📷 Ange Thalasinos 📍Bellair Reserve, Djandak, VIC

As part of the Bendigo Art Gallery’s redevelopment, we are looking for a Djaara artist to design a 3D textured surface for the façade of the gallery. This unique opportunity will allow you to create a repeating pattern based on traditional Djaara craftwork, which will be etched into the concrete façade panels. The selected artist will collaborate with the Design Team and Project Team to finalise the design and oversee its construction. This is your chance to be part of an iconic building in Bendigo that honours Djaara Culture. DJANDAK, A Dja Dja Wurrung enterprise, is thrilled to announce its Gatjin team’s Wanggal initiative is a finalist for the Organisational Excellence Award in the 2024 Australian Water Association Victoria Water Awards! Wanggal is a Djaara-led collaboration with eight water agencies operating on Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country). Wanggal works towards healing Country and waterways through a groundbreaking approach that combines Traditional Owner Knowledge with contemporary water management practices. Chaired by Djaara Elder, Uncle Graham Atkinson, Wanggal manifests the spirit of partnership, bringing together key stakeholders to see through Djaara eyes and work collectively to manage water on Country. This nomination acknowledges the impact of Kapa Gatjin (the name for our Djaara water knowledge-holder group) and the Gatjin team’s leadership in promoting a Two-Way Seeing approach, where Indigenous knowledge and Western science unite to protect and heal our waterways. We look forward to continuing this important journey and thank everyone involved for their dedication to implementing the Dhelkunyangu Gatjin strategy and vision.
