Many people with atrial fibrillation (AF) don’t have any symptoms. But this heart condition – which involves an irregular and often rapid heartbeat – increases the risk of stroke and heart failure, especially if untreated. Wearable devices such as smart watches are playing an increasing role in monitoring heart conditions like AF. A landmark study by the @Djurali Centre is the first to examine how older Indigenous people living remotely can use wearables to monitor their health. We bid farewell to Grace Waldeck, an international student from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA, who has been with us at the Djurali Centre for the past 7 weeks. During her time with us, Grace has been actively involved in several research projects, contributing to a protocol paper and systematic review. Her enthusiasm and dedication have been impressive, and we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to work alongside her. We will miss her infectious smile and her eagerness to learn, but we are also grateful for the new perspectives and insights she has brought to our team. We are sure that Grace has learned a lot about Australian history and Aboriginal culture and enjoyed the opportunity to be with us throughout 2024 NAIDOC Week celebrations. On behalf of the entire Djurali Centre team, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Grace for her hard work and commitment. First Nations Cancer Scholarship opportunity. This scholarship is one of Australia’s largest scholarships to support Indigenous health professionals complete study or research in a cancer-related field. Cancer is the leading cause of death among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, but only 1% of health professionals are Indigenous. Our hope is that the launch of this First Nations Cancer Scholarship will help to strengthen the pipeline of Indigenous healthcare professionals and bring more specialist skills and experience, to deliver better outcomes for our communities.
