Eating Disorders Families Australia

Non-profit Organizations

Through lived-experience we support, inform and advocate for families whose loved one has an eating disorder.

About us

Strong, well informed support from loved ones significantly improves the chance of recovery for people with eating disorders. Parents, family and friends caring for someone with an eating disorder are vital to their treatment and recovery, but they are not necessarily well informed, equipped or supported to be part of this process. Without effective support, eating disorders can adversely impact parents, carers and siblings, leading to life-long mental health consequences. EDFA was formed in 2016 by six parents of children and a partner with an eating disorder. EDFA is the only national organisation that exists solely to support parents, carers and siblings of those who suffer from eating disorders. EDFA’s sole aim is to support, educate and empower parents, carers and siblings during the often complex and difficult road to recovery. EDFA supports families to better manage treatment within the home, decreasing the need for hospitalisation and supporting families’ mental health and wellbeing.

  • Today, Eating Disorder Families Australia (EDFA) is at the official launch of the Victorian Eating Disorders Strategy 2024-2031. Developed with insights from those with lived experiences, this initiative prioritises accessible, evidence-based care across Victoria. The strategy includes new community-based treatment options, such as a regional day program and in-home support. It also funds early intervention specialists and bolsters services from Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV). • Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) is thrilled to announce we have won one of two $50,000 2024 Women & Change grants to launch a Hospital Liaison Officer service in Brisbane! As a lived experience organisation, we have firsthand experience of the challenges families and carers face when a loved one is admitted to hospital for eating disorder treatment. We know there is little support, comfort, or education provided. We know families are alone, they are isolated, they have little to no knowledge of how to support their loved one in the hospital setting or after discharge. This pilot project will help fill a critical gap by providing: - Empathy and support to families and their loved ones during a hospital admission; - Education on eating disorders and what to expect in the journey ahead; and - Guidance on accessing ongoing support and counselling, so families leave the hospital feeling prepared and supported. Thank you to Women & Change for helping us to transform the experience of families and carers in hospital. Congratulations to Yoorana The Second Life Project, which won the other $50,000 grant, and the other two finalists - all of which are doing incredible work in the community. #EDFA #HospitalLiasonOfficer #EatingDisorderCarers #EatingDisorderSupport #eatingdisordertreatment #eatingdisorderrecovery

  • Eating disorder carers applaud the Federal Government’s decision to increase the age limit for social media access to 16, saying the move is likely to improve the recovery chances of young people with eating disorders. This welcome news followed Eating Disorders Families Australia’s (EDFA) involvement with the #LetThemBeKids campaign that called for the Federal Government to raise the age of social media access to 16. The campaign highlighted the influence of social media on body image, disordered eating, and eating disorders as one of the many harms that stem from social media use. “Parents across Australia are breathing a sigh of relief today, particularly those who are caring for someone with an eating disorder and who fear their child may develop an eating disorder due to inappropriate content,” Executive Director Jane Rowan GAICD says. “Knowing we've helped to remove one major barrier to eating disorder recovery is a huge step in improving the recovery trajectory for many young people who are living with an eating disorder, and will significantly aid their parents and carers in supporting their recovery.” She said 81% of eating disorder carers believed social media had either contributed to the development of their loved one’s eating disorder or hampered their recovery. Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to social media harms. Implementing stricter age regulations can help protect their mental health during these crucial developmental years, as well as give them back their childhood and allow them to develop the self-confidence, critical thinking, and emotional resilience they need to thrive in life. "We will now wait with much interest for the detail of the legislation and will continue to call for effective and robust age verification as well as education for young people and their parents about how to navigate social media safely," Ms Rowan says. • A big thank you to all the grandparents who joined our very first Grandparents Support Group this afternoon! It was wonderful to welcome eight grandparents from all across Australia, including two couples and a mixture of both grandmothers and grandfathers. The group was a safe space filled with understanding, shared insights and experiences, and encouragement. Almost all attendees expressed feeling more positive after the group. Many grandparents also shared their need for more strategies to support their loved ones and for a stronger sense of connection and hope for their grandchild’s future. We are grateful to have such amazing reception and feedback for the first Grandparents Support Group and we look forward to seeing you again in our next one!
