We’re thrilled to announce that our National Consumer Behaviour Change Campaign, The Great Unwaste, which launched on September 29th, has already gained incredible positive media attention. It’s inspiring to see such strong support for reducing household food waste across the country. Our mission is clear: to offer practical, relatable solutions that empower everyday Australians to make a real impact. The response so far shows that we’re on the right track, and we can’t wait to see this campaign—and it’s grounded in research, evidence-based, positive, solutions-focused messaging—reach even more households. Together with industry, government, and the not-for-profit sector, we’re creating a united front to help Australians waste less and value more.   This is just the beginning. Today is the UN International Awareness Day of Food Loss and Waste and this year we’re excited to be launching the nationwide movement to help households across the country to make simple changes that can have a big impact on reducing the amount they throw away, saving money and creating a more sustainable future for Australia. The Great Unwaste follows the completion of research by the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre into Australians' food waste habits, which commenced in 2021. Surprisingly, a third of all food waste in Australia is actually generated in homes – and over half of this food is edible! No one sets out to waste food, and our research shows that 76% of Australians are looking for ways to reduce food waste at home - so we’re here to help. Currently, Australian households throw out almost 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, and over half of the food wasted is edible - the equivalent of 7.7 million meals of perfectly good food every single day. This waste not only impacts our environment but also represents a significant financial cost, with the average Australian household spending around $2,500 annually on food that doesn't make it to the kitchen table. This highly anticipated campaign answers the call from industry, all levels of government, and the not-for-profit sector to have consistent, evidence-based, positive and solutions-focused messaging that allows everyone to be united in helping Australians to reduce food waste. The Great Unwaste will provide practical solutions for everyday Australians, with positive, easy and relatable messaging. We are excited to release the first report from the National Date Labelling and Storage Advice Project. Our study reveals that Australians are wasting edible food because of unclear date labels and storage advice. Food date labels are confusing and storage advice instructions are inconsistent and unclear, leaving consumers baffled, storing food sub-optimally and sometimes throwing out edible food. Many consumers theoretically understand the difference between “Use by” and “Best before” date labels. However, practically, they were often treated the same, with food being disposed of when it reached either date.
