Last Thursday night, the EA and WIE committee hosted an event to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. Even it was a cold and rainy night in Canberra, the turnout was incredible, reflecting the commitment and enthusiasm of our community!

We are excited to introduce our latest interview featuring Commander Felicity Petrie, an officer of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Joining the Navy in 1999 through the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), CMDR Petrie has had a remarkable career spanning over two decades. She graduated in 2003 as a Weapons Electrical Engineer Officer and has served on several ships, including HMA Ships Anzac, Toowoomba, and Arunta. Her deployments have taken her across South East Asia, the Middle East, and Australian maritime territories, where she participated in Operations Relex and Slipper and numerous international exercises.
In early 2023, CMDR Petrie transitioned to the Navy Reserves, balancing her
reserve duties with family commitments and further studies. Her academic
achievements are notable, holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering
(Electrical) from UNSW ADFA, a Master's of Engineering from RMIT University, and a Master's of Defence and Security Studies from ANU. Felicity has extensive experience in maritime capability sustainment and delivery and her career includes significant roles in ship sustainment, capability upgrades, and innovation in naval technology. Beyond her professional pursuits, Felicity is a dedicated yoga instructor who volunteers to teach yoga to veterans and
frontline service personnel. She enjoys running, mountain biking, and spending quality time with her family and two ginger cats.

This month, we had the honour of interviewing Squadron Leader Kate Yaxley, an accomplished engineer and STEM professional within the Cyber Domain. Kate contributes to capability management for Joint Capabilities Group in the Australian Defence Force, bringing her technical expertise within electromagnetic spectrum operations and electronic warfare operational support to inform future integrated capabilities.
Kate is a 20 year Royal Australian Air Force veteran, beginning her career as an Avionics Technician before commissioning as an Electronics Engineering officer. Kate shares the importance of pursuing curiosity by supporting diversity to solve complex problems and realise innovations for leading-edge technology.
