The dedication and expertise of Epworth nurses and midwives play a vital role in ensuring the best outcomes for our patients and the communities we serve. Recently, Adj Prof Kate Gillan, Chief Nurse, hosted the ‘Leading our future’ forum, held at ZINC Federation Square. To mark this occasion, participants enjoyed a keynote address by Adj Prof Karrie Long, Chief Nurse Victoria, with nursing and midwifery leaders from across our organisation coming together to discuss important topics such as Roster Optimisation, Nurse Manager Leadership development and Patient Experience. There were many thought-provoking topics and ideas explored, that will inform key programs such as preventing and managing falls and surgical safety. Attendees were also given an insight into the Epworth Frontline Leadership program from our Education team. Thank you to those who participated in the forum. Together, let's continue to help shape the future of Epworth.

This May, Robert turned 90, marking a lifetime connection to Epworth HealthCare. Born at Epworth Richmond in 1934, Robert humorously recalls not remembering his birth but vividly remembers being a patient at four with severe pneumonia. Recently, Robert was an inpatient at Epworth Camberwell, sharing his colourful stories and sharp knowledge of local history. With multiple admissions over the years, he jokes, "I've had hips, knees, and shoulders... I intend to be around for a lot longer!" Robert's life journey includes working in Melbourne's once-thriving rag trade and his great grandfather's shipwreck in 1851. Despite changes around him, Robert's affection for Epworth and history remains strong. Looking forward to spring, Robert plans to visit his favourite spot, Talbot, near Ballarat, where his great grandparents settled. Cheers to Robert and his incredible journey! 🎉

Professor Jon Watson has started performing faecal transplants (FMT) on patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), at Epworth Geelong. It's the first time FMT will be used with the intent to treat IBD in Geelong. FMT is not a new concept. The first records of FMT have been traced back to fourth century China. FMT is used to replace the patient's current gut bacteria (microbiome) with the donor, healthy gut microbiome. Professor Watson and his team are actively involved in research on FMT with colleagues at Deakin University and at BiomeBank, South Australia. “There is still much to do and more to learn in this exciting area of gastroenterology and we are excited to bring this new treatment to Geelong for our patients,” Professor Watson said.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the rich history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. As we reflect upon the significance of NAIDOC Week at Epworth, we were incredibly inspired to hear about the experience of staff member, Vise, Clinical Care Coordinator from Epworth Richmond. “Working in Alice Springs, with the Aboriginal peoples, was both an amazing and interesting experience. I worked with other health professionals in various clinical settings and operating theatres, working with colleagues from the community and the Royal Flying Doctor Services. The Northern Territory health system is very supportive of First Nations People and they are invested in educating staff about cultural history and fundamental needs. I embraced this new adventure with an open mind and skill set, using my nursing skills to deliver safe and high-quality care in community,“ says Vise. Together, let’s continue to build and strengthen partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, staff and communities. #NAIDOCWeek
