FareShare is a charity that has been cooking free, nutritious meals for people doing it tough since 2001. We believe that every Australian deserves a nutritious meal, regardless of their circumstances or location. FareShare operates Australia’s largest non-profit kitchens in Melbourne and Brisbane where chefs and volunteers work hand in hand to cook the best possible meal for every person in need. Each year FareShare transforms rescued, donated and our homegrown food into millions of delicious, healthy meals that feed dignity and wellbeing for Australians experiencing hardship. A homestyle meal shows that somebody cares and has an immediate impact. Our healthy meals are given away free to frontline charities such as soup vans, homeless shelters, women’s refuges, First Nations organisations and groups providing disaster relief. The need for meal relief has never been higher with the soaring cost of living, frequent natural disasters and the lingering effects of the pandemic hurting millions of Australians.

Aurukun Shire Council will deliver 1920 meals a month to vulnerable people in the community with the establishment of the FareShare Meals for the Mob program in Aurukun thanks to a collaborative effort with multiple organisations. Essential supplies have arrived in a refrigerated container donated by the Indigenous Futures Foundation with the support of the NABFOUNDATION. Foodbank Queensland has contributed five pallets of goods, Share the Dignity has donated a quarter pallet of personal care items, and SecondBite has filled the remaining space in the container as well as providing storage to facilitate loading and collection. Multiple services and agencies in community will stock the culturally appropriate and nutritious meals, providing them as relief to those who are experiencing food insecurity. This model will encourage community members to engage with programs and services that can support them to address the challenges being experienced in accessing appropriate food. #mealsforthemob

It was all zoom-zoom in FareShare's Abbotsford corporate volunteering kitchen recently, thanks to these volunteers from Mazda Australia Pty Ltd. They put their pedal to the metal, assembling and packing 659 beef meals with rice and mixed veggies, topping and tailing 20kgs of snow peas, chopping 70kgs of broccoli grown in our kitchen gardens, and more. Yesterday, SecondBite | FareShare had the honour of presenting to the Inquiry into Food Security in Victoria, addressing the pressing issue of rising food insecurity in Victoria. For SecondBite | FareShare our focus is on supporting access to healthy nutritious food, and providing targeted and tailored solutions for those who are in need of food relief. While food relief is crucial, we recognise it’s not the only solution. At SecondBite, we are committed to continuing our work by rescuing and redistributing surplus food, while also advocating for systemic change. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this inquiry and remain committed to working alongside The Legislative Council Legal and Social Issues Committee, community organisations, and all stakeholders to create a fairer, more equitable food system for all Victorians. Did you know that the Australian food relief sector has a great opportunity to influence key legislation that would reduce the amount of food being lost, thus unlocking heaps of nutritious food to help alleviate food insecurity? SecondBite | FareShare and our food relief friends Foodbank Australia and OzHarvest are calling for a number of amendments to this bill, so more farmers, food businesses and transport/logistics businesses can be eligible for incentives, and more charities can benefit from this donated food. Our friends at Conga Foods – the home of much-loved food brands like Moro oil and Rana pasta – have taken their ethos of sharing to another level! Conga Foods are generous food donors to FareShare, and recently donated us fresh lasagne sheets, which our chefs and a wonderful group from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools transformed into 2,500 scrumptious meat and veggie lasagne meals for people doing it tough [see second picture]. Fun Fact: Did you know that by cutting lasagne into thick strips, you create pappardelle? Our chefs did; they used the remaining lasagne sheets to make 7,000 additional pappardelle meals! These fellow foodies followed up their donation by giving up their time to volunteer in the FareShare Abbotsford kitchen this month. Over two shifts, they: 🍄 prepared 850 delicious, ready-to-eat mushroom agnolotti with pumpkin and bacon sauce and parmesan meals, 🍝 prepared 677 winter-warming, homestyle tortellini in chunky vegetable sauce meals, 🔪 chopped hundreds of kilos of cauliflower and leeks for future meals, 🍛 and prepped 40 big trays of rice to accompany hundreds more meals. Our Fiona Maxwell joined a panel discussion at the End Food Waste Australia National Food Waste Summit in Melbourne today, which focuses on halving Australia's food waste by 2030. Alongside Patricia Lindeman (Food Technologist, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland)), they discussed transforming rescued food into shelf-stable meals. Many people who experience food insecurity have limited or no access to cooking facilities, a fridge or safe storage.
