Professor Peter Yu recently sat down with Larissa Behrendt on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Speaking Out program to discuss his extensive experience in Indigenous Affairs, spanning over 40 years. They also touch on Professor Yu's advocacy for the social, cultural, and economic advancement of Indigenous people and communities, his role in negotiating the Federal Government's response to the Mabo High Court decision on Native Title in the early 1990s, and his work at the Kimberley Land Council advocating for the rights of Traditional Owners. About us
As a branch of the University’s executive, the First Nations Portfolio works with colleagues across the University to ensure the ANU is a world leader in teaching and research of First Nations issues. It also works to ensure that the University makes a leading contribution to national policy in the relationship between Indigenous Australians and the nation. The Portfolio enables the University to provide leadership on national policy discourse and decisions that impact First Nations peoples, and be an employer and educator of choice for Indigenous Australians by: * Providing leadership and strategic direction across the University * Facilitating research and policy impact * Supporting Indigenous community engagement * Supporting Indigenous students throughout their time at the University * Advising on Indigenous staff recruitment and wellbeing * Facilitating the integration of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into the curriculum Indigenous equity and engagement is not the preserve of any one unit in the ANU but rather will be embedded as part of our normal business through the University, as we embrace the principle ‘Nothing about us without us’. The First Nations Portfolio is led by the Vice-President First Nations, Professor Peter Yu – a Yawuru man from Broome in the Kimberley region in North West Australia with over 40 years experience in Indigenous development and advocacy in the Kimberley and at the state, national and international level.

On this day, August 13th, we remember a pivotal moment in Australian history: the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions by the Yolŋu people to the Australian Parliament in 1963. These petitions, one written in Yolŋu Matha and the other in English, marked the beginning of the modern land rights movement in Australia. Also, it was the first time documents incorporating First Nations ways of representing relationships to land were recognised by parliament. The Yirrkala Bark Petitions were a courageous response to the Menzies Government’s decision to open a bauxite mine at Yirrkala without consulting the Traditional Owners. By outlining their demands onto bark traditionally painted with Yolŋu designs, the Yolŋu people asserted their inherent land rights and the deep connection they have with their land. Today, we honour their resilience and the ongoing struggle for land rights, recognising the importance of these petitions in the broader fight for justice and recognition of Indigenous Australians. Today marks the 30th anniversary of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, a day that has been observed since 1994 to honour the rich cultures, unique traditions, and invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the globe. This day was established by the United Nations to promote and protect the rights of the world’s Indigenous populations. It also serves as a reminder of the significant challenges that Indigenous communities face, from protecting their land and culture to ensuring their voices are heard in global discussions. The theme for 2024, "Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination," highlights the vital role that young Indigenous leaders play in advocating for their communities and leading the charge towards a more just and equitable future. At the Garma Festival over the weekend, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed his commitment to developing a comprehensive economic policy for Indigenous people. As the Prime Minister said, citing Professor Peter Yu, “Australia has never attempted this before”. A historic collaboration between Indigenous leaders and government to develop this policy is in its early stages. It draws from the work undertaken by Professor Yu and other Indigenous leaders. The commitment by The Australian National University to support First Nations economic empowerment has a long history and the University will continue to play a vital national leadership role in the future. Reflecting on the incredible journey of Wiradjuri woman The Hon. Linda Burney as she steps down as Minister for Indigenous Australians and decides not to contest the next election. Linda Burney's legacy is a testament to resilience and groundbreaking achievements. As the first Indigenous woman in Federal Cabinet and the first Aboriginal woman in the House of Representatives, she has paved the way for future leaders. Her career has been marked by a deep commitment to service and a profound impact on First Nations communities. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised her strength and courage, highlighting her ability to transform personal challenges into hope and optimism for the nation. Linda’s journey reminds us that progress doesn’t always follow a straight path. Her leadership has inspired a new generation of Indigenous leaders, and her efforts have brought meaningful change despite setbacks. "I was the first Indigenous person elected to the New South Wales Parliament, the first Indigenous woman in the House of Representatives, the first Indigenous woman to be appointed by this wonderful man here to Cabinet, but I won't be the last. To me, that is progress." Read more here: https://bit.ly/46hCdlO #FNP #IndigenousLeadership #IndigenousExcellence #LindaBurney #Legacy #Progress #Wiradjuri

Exciting times for Nari Nari Tribal Council Ltd. Jamie Woods, chair of the NNTC, is leading a transformative project in southwestern NSW. By partnering with Kilara Energy, they’re hosting a windfarm on Gayini land. This venture will fund community programs and create opportunities for the next generation. “We want the destiny in our hands,” says Woods. The initiative aims to foster Indigenous-led programs to support youth and reduce suicide rates among First Nations people. Key highlights: - Equity Partnership: NNTC will co-own and benefit directly from the 74-turbine windfarm. - Economic Empowerment: Revenue from turbines will support cultural centers and social programs. - Future-Focused: This collaboration represents a model for First Nations involvement in the renewable energy sector. The project not only brings economic benefits but also paves the way for greater First Nations participation in Australia’s energy transition. A groundbreaking alliance, comprised of dedicated Indigenous leaders and The Australian National University, has been formed to drive comprehensive economic empowerment for First Nations people in Australia. After two years of diligent research and work by the ANU First Nations Portfolio, the First Nations Economic Empowerment Alliance is ready to initiate crucial conversations about Indigenous economic prosperity. Professor Peter Yu, Vice President (First Nations) at ANU, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating that Australia has never pursued a comprehensive macro-economic policy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The alliance aims to rectify this by advancing major economic reforms, involving prominent individuals and key organisations such as the National Native Title Council, Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, Indigenous Business Australia and First Australians Capital. The recently published Murru Waaruu Outcomes Report provides a framework for these reforms, advocating for a new fiscal relationship based on Indigenous wealth creation rather than welfare. This alliance represents a significant step towards a future where Indigenous communities are integral economic partners in the national economy.
