About us
First Step is a not-for-profit addiction, mental health and legal services hub in St Kilda, Melbourne. We provide free services to thousands of vulnerable Victorians every year, with the firm belief that everybody deserves every chance to turn their lives around. First Step provides a uniquely multi-disciplinary team of GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers, mental health nurses, care coordinators, counsellors, men’s and women’s groups. All for free. All from one team. All at one site. Many of our clients live stable lives, connected with family, work and education. But our multi-disciplinary team specialises in supporting people with complex needs, those at risk of hospitalisation for their mental health, imprisonment, homelessness, or worse. At First Step we believe that chronic addiction is generally a long-term, painful adaptation to childhood abuse and neglect, and that timely and effective treatment is a matter of social justice that benefits all of society. We work to keep people connected to their families, participating in society and taking control of their own lives.

The Coroners Court of Victoria Annual Report for 2023 - 2024 has revealed that there were 601 fatal overdoses in Victoria during the 2023 - 2024 timeframe. That is almost 20% higher than the past financial year. This is horrific data and we stand with the many Victorians who have lost loved ones to overdose. At First Step, we believe that every client deserves a space that reflects their worth. We're moving to 18 Mitford Street St Kilda in the new year for a number of reasons - we've run out of room, our leased property is being sold, and mental health reform in Victoria has stalled. We have the expertise, the model and the commitment to deliver the integrated care Victorians need - we just need the space to do it. Our move is driven by our commitment to providing our clients with a welcoming, dignified environment where they can continue accessing life-changing care. First Step Legal
