Michael Edwards wasn’t in Paris to join Coty’s celebration. In his place, the team attended Coty's #coty120 celebration which weaved together 120 years of history from Coty the founder and his many legendary perfumes, to Coty the company behind so many innovative modern fragrances like CKOne and Jovan Musk, all of which were written about in Michael Edwards' Perfume Legends and American Legends books. At it's conclusion the event looked to the future where the company’s creators spoke about innovations in science that are enabling ongoing advances. As an example, Infiniment Coty À Paris, a collection that harnesses Coty’s patented Molecule Aura, an innovation in slowing down fragrance’s evaporation. The result, a longer lasting perfume experience of 30 hours. Thank you to Guerric de Beauregard and his talented team for today’s experience in Paris, the city of perfume.

Regarded as the perfume experts’ expert, Michael Edwards’ dedication, devotion, knowledge, commitment and passion is unrivalled. His innovative contribution to the fragrance industry over the past three decades is momentous. In developing a guide for fragrance retailers in 1983, which categorised 323 fragrances, Michael made his first leap into what would become the industries ‘go to’ guide. His aim, “to make fragrance selection an exciting journey rather than a difficult chore,” changed fragrance vending forever. Fragrances of the World is now growing making it the industry’s most comprehensive reference. It remains the only independent and impartial guide, with Michael accepting no advertising or fees for fragrance listings. Edwards developed the Fragrance Wheel, an olfactory ‘map’ explaining relationships between 14 fragrance families. The wheel has since become a universal icon of perfume classification and essential selling tool. In 1996 Michael’s book, Perfume Legends: French Feminine Fragrances revealed the secret world of perfumery, instantly becoming a cult classic. It is now considered one of the most significant books written on modern perfumery. In 2005 Edwards introduced FragrancesoftheWorld.info - the only fragrance database that sorts and cross-references, more than 30,000 fragrances by classifications, pyramid and accord notes, perfumers and bottle designers, bottle images, house and corporate groups, gender, country, and year of launch. The online database offers such a wealthy source of information that the industry recognised Michael twice with the highly prestigious FiFi award for Technological Breakthrough. Today, Edwards is a nomad by necessity. He divides his time between Sydney, Paris and New York in order to stay abreast of the market, keep in touch with the avalanche of new launches - from just 130 in 1993 to more than 2,200 in 2017. This week Michael Edwards presented his latest book, American Legends, to the Australian press. Hosted by Estée Lauder and introduced by Emmerentia Wilding, General Manager for The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. in Oceania, Michael inspired the audience with the history of American perfumery, the result of 30 years of research for his book. Naturally, Estée Lauder played a pivotal role in shaping the history and this linked perfectly to the Australian launch of Estée Lauder’s new Legacy Collection. This week Michael Edwards rejoins the team back in Australia and we are revisiting highlights from his meetings abroad. In London, he met perfume expert, author and podcaster Karen Gilbert. Michael talks about how his classification system began as a labour of love, developing into the database we know today, with over 55,000 fragrances classified. A fabulous night for a fabulous cause. Congratulations Look Good Feel Better Australia for a spectacularly successful Dream Ball 2024. Margaret Khoury and Erica Moore represented Michael Edwards and Fragrances of the World at this year's ball, raising money alongside others in the beauty industry which goes towards programs that help everyday Australians face their cancer diagnosis with confidence.

Last week the team was present at Esxence in Milan to gather information and evaluate novelties being presented by 360 global niche brands from 30 countries. It was the biggest edition of Esxence to date, undoubtedly surpassing last year’s figure of 10,000 visitors. In 2009, the year of Esxence’s first edition, we recorded 374 new niche launches. Last year that figure was 1563. The growth of niche perfumery is astounding. Highlights for us at Esxence are our meetings with brands and their founders to discuss the evolving state of niche perfumery. The overall mood we observed from exhibitors and visitors was extremely positive. There was an undeniable buzz at the exhibition and in the surrounding hotels with some niche brands choosing to present externally. The team’s favourite memories include discussing new launches with Akro founders Anaïs Cresp and perfumer OLIVIER CRESP, meeting dsm-firmenich perfumer HAMID MERATI - KASHANI who presented Fabbrica della Musa with co-founder Barbara Adelmann, talking with CEO-Perfumer Luca Maffei about the successful growth of his business. Having such a strong link to Australia the team also enjoyed seeing many of the Australian niche brands, distributors and retailers in Milan including Map of the Heart, Goldfield & Banks Australia, Grandiflora Fragrance and Mihan Aromatics. Our Evaluation and Communications Manager, Clayton Ilolahia, presented in the auditorium and spoke about the data we collected in 2023, current trends and the shifting definition of niche perfumery. https://lnkd.in/g-a7GPQM
