As an Electrical Estimator, Hannah Lee plays a crucial role in shaping projects from the ground up. Each day brings something new, and she enjoys the opportunity to gain insight into upcoming developments, seeing projects take shape long before they come to life. Throughout her career, Hannah has faced challenges as a woman in the industry, especially in the early days as an electrician on-site, working in predominantly male teams. Stepping to this environment was initially daunting, but by putting in the effort and finding her voice, Hannah was accepted as one of the team. With the support of male colleagues, she has been able to thrive in her career, and this positive experience continues at Fredon. Reflecting on the progressing industry, Hannah notes: “It’s also encouraging to witness an increasing number of women entering the trades, as well as the growth of support programs for women in the industry.” International Women’s Day holds significant meaning for Hannah as it is a moment to promote and celebrate the incredible achievements of women in all their diverse forms. It’s also a day for us all to shine a light on the areas where we still need to strive for greater equality. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” resonates deeply with Hannah. It represents the ongoing need for equal opportunities and support for women and girls. Especially in the trades, she believes that men play a crucial role in bridging the gap. Without their support, achieving equality will continue to be a challenge. Small actions, such as hiring more women or supporting programs dedicated to women, can make a meaningful difference in creating a more inclusive and equal industry. #IWD2025 #ForAllWomenAndGirls #AccelerateAction

As a Design and Integration Engineer for Fredon Technology, Roselyn Jimenez plays a key role in delivering innovative technology solutions. Her responsibilities vary depending on the stage of the project. During the design phase, her focus is on creating schematic diagrams and layout designs using tools like Visio, AutoCAD, or Revit for 3D modelling. In the commissioning phase, Roselyn spends time testing and configuring AV equipment, either in the lab or on-site, ensuring everything functions as expected. International Women’s Day holds significant meaning for Roselyn as it is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women, especially in male-dominated fields like engineering and technology. For her, the day highlights the importance of encouraging more women to pursue careers in STEM, showing that gender should never limit success. Throughout her career, Roselyn has faced challenges, particularly in establishing credibility as a woman in the AV field. As someone new to the industry, it was important for her to build confidence through continuous learning, asking questions, and gaining practical experience. Seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues has also played a key role in overcoming these challenges. One valuable piece of advice Roselyn has received is to "never stop learning, as technology is always evolving." Roselyn has also been encouraged to seek mentorship and to get hands-on experience.  #IWD2025 #ForAllWomenAndGirls #AccelerateAction

Women in Construction students at Melba Copland Secondary School were last week able to point at two new infrastructure projects they’d pitched, developed and constructed at the school and say, “I built that!” The year 9 students worked in teams to research, conceive and budget for the works, then learnt to safely use the materials and tools needed to build them. They were part of the first extension of the Understanding Building and Construction Program (UBCP) Women in Construction elective, previously offered over one semester, with the second semester enabled through Solar Feed-in Tariff funding and industry partner support. Principal Jennifer Howard said the students had gained skills in communications, stakeholder engagement and project management, “but also skills for life, so that they will be able to live independently”. The classes were the highlight of the week for Myra, project manager for her team’s landscaped courtyard garden with seating. “It feels good, because if I want to do something, I can just do it myself, I don’t need anyone’s help,” she said. The leader of the other project team, Olivia, and her teammates added outdoor tables and stools made of recycled electrical cabling reels to a little used space that can now host outdoor learning and school community events. “It feels good that people can use something that we’ve made, that’s helped better the school, through our 20 weeks doing this,” she said. Teacher Amber Turner primarily teaches French and loves it, but says Women in Construction is her most rewarding class. “Watching the students grow is awesome. They’ve gone from not using tools at all to being able to drill pilot holes, put the screws in, paint, use routers, sanders … they thrive.” Even before the extension was a twinkle in Amber’s eye, demand for the elective was high, with more than double the students keen to participate in 2024 as there were available slots. “I’ve had girls coming and saying, ‘Miss … if we come and help, can we be in the class next year?” Read more: https://bit.ly/3Dnd5zH

The awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of emerging leaders and exceptional staff, and we are proud to announce that Joshua Scaffardi, Fredon Air WA Project Manager, was a finalist in 2 categories – Future Leader Award and Project Management and Support Award. These projects were marked by tight schedules, budget constraints and ran concurrently but Joshua approached these challenges with confidence and professionalism. His commitment to excellence ensured the successful delivery of these projects to a high standard. Congratulations, Joshua! This recognition is well-deserved. Keep up the great work!
