What is the best way to connect researchers and decision makers? How is this implemented successfully, and then measured? Sustainability Science recently published a study on the attributes of effective knowledge brokers in the environment sphere. Evaluation towards diverse goals, strategies and personal contributions create successful knowledge exchange collaborations. Knowledge brokering is a key service of Future Earth Australia, where we produce extensive consultation and facilitate evidence-based collaboration for crucial sustainability transitions. Read the most extensive new studies on trees in the Amazon rainforest! 🌴 🦋 'The pace of life for forest trees' is based on 3.2 million tree measurements across the Americas - the most comprehensive assessment ever conducted. 'The biography of the Amazonian tree flora' explores how tree communities change across the Amazon basin due to a variety of factors. These recent papers are providing brand-new insights into Earth's tree communities in and around the Amazon rainforest. Happy reading! 📑 References: Bialic-Murphy, L., et al. 2024. The IUCN is supporting alternative conservation methods outside of protected areas. Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) "represent an expansion of the conservation paradigm, managed directly or indirectly to conserve biodiversity and relevant cultural, spiritual, and socio-economic values for local communities." These wholistic, inclusive and adaptive responses embody transdisciplinarity in conservation and sustainable management. 🌿 Read about OECMs in South America here: https://lnkd.in/gFaZUVcD.

🙌🏼 What an amazing week! 🧬 The Australian Academy of Science was on show this week, and wow 👀 did Science at the Shine Dome deliver in spades. Seeing the celebration of science in so many forms was incredibly uplifting. The diversity and caliber of academic excellence was astounding as always. I come away in even more awe of our world (& beyond!) and the incredible people working to understand our place within it all. 🌏 Future Earth Australia is proudly incubated by the Academy, and we were on show this week too as we hosted lunch to bring together Australian based members of the vast Future Earth network. Other highlights of the week were launching the Academy’s Innovation Reconciliation Action Plan, hearing from Her Excellency the Governer-General at the Gala dinner, and the always popular gelato cart🍦 My sincere thanks for the stellar leadership of Anna-Maria Arabia and Chennupati Jagadish, AC Congratulations everyone on a fabulous #ShineDome24 🌟

The University of the Sunshine Coast has developed a chlamydia vaccine for koalas that can reduce disease-related deaths in wild populations by at least 65%. Research is ongoing to establish a veterinary-approved product for distribution in vulnerable populations. As we celebrate National Science Week in Australia, it is important not only to look at the future of science, but to the past. Decolonising science in a colonised world is complex, but these complexities should not deter from action. Science and research practices that are inclusive, listen deeply, and actively work to decolonise are the only equitable way forward.
