Garvan's mission is to make significant contributions to medical research that will change the directions of science and medicine and have major impacts on human health. Garvan strives to enhance and develop research programs that combine fundamental science with strong clinical interactions. Research at Garvan is focused upon understanding the role of genes and molecular and cellular processes in health and disease as the basis for developing future preventions, treatments and cures. For over 50 years, significant breakthroughs have been achieved by Garvan scientists in the understanding and treatment of diseases such as: * Cancer * Diabetes and obesity * Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, hearing loss, mental illnesses and eating disorders * Osteoporosis * Immunological diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Sjogren's syndrome Garvan's ultimate goal is prevention, treatment or cure of these major diseases.

What is the biggest challenge with current treatments for multiple sclerosis? Current treatments might stop the progression of the disease, but they don’t reverse the damage that has already happened, and they don’t work for every individual. We’re working to try and change that for future patients diagnosed with this crippling disease. Find out how you can support this important research: https://ow.ly/nnxI50TRjvH

Episode 4 of Medical Minds season 3 is out now! “What we have done over the last four or five decades, is really start to understand the biology of fibrosis. Why is it important? How does it feed into the progression of a cancer? More importantly, how might that affect treatments that we give patients,” says A/Prof Thomas Cox. Find out what Garvan researcher's are doing to improve cancer therapy. https://ow.ly/mnVs50TRiaQ It's available to stream on Apple and Spotify! Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming teams from Yosemite and Tenmile to the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. They took a deep dive into Garvan’s cancer research and toured our state-of-the-art facilities, including the ACRF INCITe Centre, our world-leading intravital imaging facility. A huge thank you to Reed Jobs and Dr Steve Burnell for this opportunity to share Garvan’s strategic direction, highlight the clinical impact of our research and exchange ideas. #MedicalResearch #CancerResearch #Innovation #Collaboration
