To conclude #ScamsWeek2024, we’re highlighting common impersonation scams.    Impersonation tactics are scammers' art of deception, where they pose as trusted individuals to manipulate and exploit their victims. These tactics rely on building a facade of credibility and trust, all for financial gain or to steal sensitive information.    Scammers may pretend to be family members or friends, using emotions to their advantage. They typically send a WhatsApp or a text message from an unknown number, impersonating someone close and claiming emergencies or financial distress to trick you into sending money. It can begin with: "Hi Mum," continuing with something along the lines of "I've changed provider/lost/broken my phone – I'm temporarily using this number for now."    Attackers can also impersonate trusted figures, like coworkers or managers, through email or social media channels. They might instruct you to take actions like transferring funds, sharing sensitive company data, or clicking on links with malware.    To safeguard yourself against these impersonation scams, maintain a high level of awareness and scepticism. Verify the identities of those reaching out via texts or emails, especially when dealing with financial matters.    Be #ScamAware. Check for tricks before you click.

Continuing with #ScamsWeek2024, today we look at spoofing and caller ID manipulation.    With spoofing, scammers use deceptive technology to impersonate legitimate or trusted entities on your caller ID, aiming to exploit trust and access your personal information.     Unlike technical exploits, spoofing relies on emotional triggers like fear, curiosity, and trust, making it tougher to detect and defend against.    It’s not enough to trust caller ID alone. Here’s how to protect yourself:    1. Never click on unexpected links   2. Find the organisation’s phone number independently   3. Think before giving money or personal information   4. Contact your bank immediately if scammed and report to Scamwatch     Be #ScamAware. Check for tricks before you click.
