Last night's Entrepreneur Education dinner brought together a full house of WA founders. Derek Gerrard shared some great insights on raising capital, followed by a panel discussion hosted by Kylie Gerrard, where three WA founders - Dave Newman, Svetlana Baltic, Daniel McCullen - shared their experiences on raising capital for their startups. Thanks to everyone who came along, and a special thank you to the WA Government's Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation  X-TEND grant for making this event possible.

The Human Genetics Society of Australasia - HGSA conference 2024 has now come to a close. We enjoyed re-connecting with friends and colleagues and meeting and connecting with many more who share a similar passion for the potential of PGx - Prescribing with Precision. 🧬💊 It was an amazing conference and we enjoyed talking about our new PGx NGS solution named Rosa after the awe inspiring Rosalind Franklin. Our first product - RosaMind - targets mental health medications in a sadly growing area of need. A huge congratulations to Monica Runiewicz who won the Gene S raffle for an iPad. Talking pharmacogenomics and precision medicine, Faculty Fellow A/Prof Luke Hesson will be presenting at the 47th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia - HGSA. A/Prof Hesson will be presenting about ‘The relevance of pharmacogenetic testing in an Australasian population'. As Chair of the RCPA Pharmacogenetic Advisory Group, he will also discuss the Pharmacogenomic Indications Project recently published by the RCPA, which provided guidance for prescribers, pharmacologists and pathologists regarding clinical indications for pharmacogenomics testing in Australia. The HGSA Conference will be from 10 to 13 August 2024. A/Prof Luke Hesson's presentation will be on Monday 12 August. SPAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF UNIVERSAL IMPLEMENTATION OF PHARMACOGENETICS FOR ALL CITIZENS BY INCLUDING IT IN THE NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM 7 June 2023. The Spanish Ministry of Health approves the inclusion of pharmacogenetic biomarkers in the Common Portfolio of Services of the National Health System. 23 June 2023. The Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (health providers) approves it unanimously. 29 July 2024. The AEMPS, Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products, publishes a database for consultation on genetic biomarkers included in drug labels.

As of today, evidence-based #pharmacogenomics testing is now covered by Medi-Cal (AB425) and commercial insurers (SB496) in the state of #California, aligning with Medicare coverage in place since 2020. After years of work, I want to stop and celebrate this win that will help curb the annual loss of 33,000 lives and 62 billion dollar spend due to non-optimized medications in the state. This would not have happened without the leadership of Assemblymember Alvarez, the tireless efforts of his legislative assistant Cynthia Yepez, and countless meetings with other California legislators coordinated by Chantelle Schenning, PhD, MHA, Megan Boyd, MA, CAPM and Michael Hawkins. This would not have happened without outreach to Alvarez by a brave young girl and her Mother looking to improve access for others when #pgx testing resulted in resolution of her #depression symptoms after numerous failed medications. This would not have happened without live testimony from Christine Von Raesfeld 💜on the impact pharmacogenomic testing had in improving her quality of life or Bani Tamraz, Pharm.D., Ph.D. on the science and clinical and financial benefits of testing. This would not have happened without companies and individuals reaching out to their legislators to voice their support for the legislation. I am grateful that so many more patients can now access personalized care, but the work is not over until similar efforts move forward in every state and nationally.
