  • We are excited to share insights from the Australian Institute of Company Directors Sydney Essential Director Update 2024, which our team attended this morning. Christine Holman’s presentation on generative AI, cyber security, and mandatory climate reporting was enlightening.

I enjoyed attending the Australian Institute of Company Directors Sydney Essential Director Update 2024 this morning. Christine Holman’s presentation on generative AI, cyber security, and mandatory climate reporting was clear and insightful. Christine emphasised that generative AI is the most important technology of our time, with her personal favourite being Perplexity AI. She highlighted the importance of governance guardrails, including responsibility and ethics, and urged us to understand our company’s capabilities, restraints, and limitations. She also warned of the risks associated with AI, such as bias in data and algorithms, hallucinations, and misuse by bad actors. David Autor from MIT aptly noted, “AI extends the relevance, reach, and value of human expertise.” The Australian Federal Government has established guardrails to guide its use. On the topic of cyber security, Minister Tony Burke has pointed out that cyber security is no longer guaranteed, and breaches are to be expected. It has been said that organisations can be categorised into two types: those that have been breached and those that are unaware they have been breached. Directors should consider Black Box and expert scenario testing to identify vulnerabilities and be cyber-ready to prevent cyberwashing. Regular reviews and practice of back-ups, as well as frequent reviews of cyber insurance, are essential. Regarding mandatory climate reporting, Christine stressed that sustainability strategies do not compete with traditional business strategies. She reminded us that we take from our planet without consequence and that the market demands comparable information on climate reporting. Mandatory climate reporting will come into effect on 1st January 2025, with AASB 2 mandatory standards and AASB 1 voluntary standards working hand in hand with strategy and risk. It’s crucial to consider the financial implications, including the cost of insurance, and to adopt voluntary measures ahead of mandated reporting. Embedding sustainability into business as usual is no longer optional; reporting standards now make it central to strategy and risk. Oversight by the Board, such as a Audit and Risk Committee is essential, and it is not solely the responsibility of the Sustainability Officer. The Cambridge University Institute of Sustainability offers a short course on this topic. Don’t miss the strategic opportunity to embed sustainability into your strategy. In conclusion, Christine urged directors to seize the opportunities presented by these climate initiatives. Our ability to meet these climate goals is crucial for the future of business and our planet. #AICD2024 #GenerativeAI #CyberSecurity #ClimateReporting #Sustainability #CorporateGovernance #BusinessStrategy #AI #EthicalAI #RiskManagement #BoardDirectors #FutureOfBusiness #SustainableBusiness
