ΖΗΤΩ Η 28η ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΥ! GAS was delighted to commemorate the anniversary of Oxi Day alongside Greek-Australians across the country, with events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane over the past three days. On Saturday, GAS Secretary George Mpliokas laid a wreath at an event hosted by Inner West Council in Sydney, in the presence of Mayor Darcy Byrne, Ministers The Hon. Ron Hoenig MP and Jo Haylen, and Yannis Mallikourtis from the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney. On Sunday, GAS Board Member Apollonas Karakaidos laid a wreath at an event hosted by the Pallaconian Brotherhood in Melbourne. George Mpliokas also attended the Macarthur Greeks celebrations in Campbelltown in Sydney. On Monday, GAS President Peter Dracakis attended a commemorative event hosted by The Hellenic Initiative and George Mastrocostas from the Greek Consulate of Queensland at Brisbane City Hall. ΟΧΙ! On Monday, 28th October 1940, the Greek nation was given an ultimatum by fascist Italy to surrender and lay down its arms. The people of Greece said 'No'. The Greco-Italian War in the mountains of #Epirus saw rapid mobilisation, heroic resistance and ultimate sacrifice by the Greek Army and local population, eventually driving the Italians back into Albania in the harsh winter of 1940. The eventual German invasion and Allied withdrawal from Greece in April 1941 delayed the Nazi war machine, impacting the outcome of World War II. The Greeks, in the spirit of #democracy and love of homeland, became a beacon of hope and an inspiration to the world which endures today. Lest we forget. #OXIDay #GreekAustralians
