Faith Popcorn is the 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 transforming how businesses prepare for what’s next! Founder of Faith Popcorn's BrainReserve, Faith is celebrated for her accurate predictions of 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. She coined the term "cocooning" in the 1980s to describe the trend of people seeking comfort and security by retreating into their homes. This concept gained widespread attention as it foreshadowed changes in consumer behaviour around home-focused lifestyles, entertainment, and technology. Faith has been the secret weapon for brands like 𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘢-𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘢, 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯, helping them navigate change and stay ahead of what consumers want. You’re running late. The elevator button has already been pressed, but you press it again. Why? You’re falling for the illusion of control bias. The illusion of control bias, a term first coined by psychologist Ellen Langer, is a tendency for people to believe they have more control over outcomes than they actually do.  It's the same impulse that has you Googling random facts instead of tackling that big project.  You’re unsure if you can do the hard thing, but you know you can complete that Google search.  While those actions might give us a momentary sense of control, they're often just distractions that pull us away from our real goals. So how do we outsmart this bias? Start by catching yourself in the act.  Next time you're about to do something besides what you should be doing, pause. What's the feeling driving that urge? Anxiety? Restlessness? Then, to beat this bias more consistently, try time-boxing your schedule. Decide what you will do and when you will do it, then stick to it.  It's like telling that bias, "Nice try, but I've got this under control." Learning doesn’t happen by simply working hard – it requires focus and intentional growth. Inspired by Andrea Clarke’s Future Fit, here are five ways for leaders and teams to boost their learning mindset: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻: Make a habit of reading books and listening to podcasts from top thinkers. These sources provide fresh ideas, expand your knowledge, and offer a variety of perspectives on leadership and innovation. 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Gain practical skills and exposure to new ways of thinking. These sessions offer actionable insights and help you work smarter, not harder, by learning directly from industry experts. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Find a mentor whose experience aligns with your goals. A good mentor provides guidance, accountability, and insights that can fast-track your growth. 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Conferences and workshops are excellent for connecting with peers and gaining inspiration. They offer a chance to learn from others’ experiences and broaden your network. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀: Dedicate time to reflect on your recent experiences and learning. Use this time to set achievable goals for your growth and identify areas to explore next. How do you pursue growth and learning? Share your favourite tips below! #growth #growthmindset #learning #learninganddevelopment
