Life hacks based on the systems thinking approach work because how you think is how you act ... is how you are! Life or work challenge: Are you frustrated by your best made plans stalling? How do you maintain the initial enthusiasm for the change that you have started with? Life hack (8 of 12) is entropy. Entropy is central to the second law of thermodynamics, which states that the entropy of a closed (isolated) system left to spontaneous evolution cannot decrease with time, so it must increase. As a result, closed systems evolve toward thermodynamic equilibrium where the entropy is highest. The old cliché on entropy goes something like this: ‘From the time we’re born, we begin to die’— is an apt one here. Our cells completely regenerate every seven years, and, in a sense, we become completely a new/older person. Most change efforts fail because they aren’t given enough follow-up, reinforcement, booster shots, and new energy. Though many managers want to get everything up and running on auto-pilot, this is the antithesis of what actually makes change happen. In systems terms, it takes negative entropy—what we call new energy in normal terms—to make change occur. Organisations are systems and a system’s structure generates its behavior. Since most organizations (and especially organizational structures) exist in a steady state, dynamic equilibrium, how do you use it positively to effect change? The answer is it is very difficult because the steady state structure naturally resists change as it is often not in their own best interests. Who is resisting? Why? Life hacks based on the systems thinking approach work because how you think is how you act ... is how you are! Life or work challenge: Are you frustrated by your inability to be fast, lean and flexible in the way your organisation gets things done? There is usually not one “best” way to solve most problems Life hack (7 of 12) is equifinality. This thinking hack is about understanding that in mechanistic systems we see is a direct cause and effect relationship between the initial conditions and the final state. Biological and social systems operate differently. Equifinality suggests that certain results can be achieved with different initial conditions and in different ways. It offers us the basis for the flexibility, agility, and choice needed in today's dynamic world. Decentralization is extending delegation to the lowest level. Decentralization refers to delegation of authority throughout all the levels of the organisation. Decision making authority is shared with lower levels and is consequently placed nearest to the points of action. A reflex arc is a concept borrowed from human physiology which describes a how neural pathways acting on an impulse before the impulse has actually reached the brain (aka little hammer striking below the knee). It models a short cut in a delegated decision-making process resulting from placing authority for action nearest to the where the action needs to occur.
