    "I'm looking to change practice groups, but can I do it?" The answer is yes*. I've helped many candidates make the successful transition from one practice group to another. Whether this is from personal injuries to commercial litigation or from family law to wills & estates. *However, there are some questions you need to ask yourself before you make the jump. I've included two of the more important ones below. 1. What are my salary expectations? Changing practice groups comes with the real possibility of a pay cut (not in all cases, but in most). This will depend on a variety of factors, such as how closely aligned the new practice group is to your old one, if you have some experience with the work you're looking to transition to, and how senior you are in your current role. What's important is that you weigh up your current salary against the opportunity to carve a new career path. 2. How committed am I to making the change? It's a big step to change practice groups. You'll no doubt have the core skillset to do well (such as your drafting skills, attention to detail and client communication skills), but it will come with a learning curve. There will be subject matter that is foreign to you, and potentially a large difference in how files are run. Commitment (and interest) will be key. If you haven't already, look for leaders in that space to find out more about the matters you could be working on, and whether they're actually of interest to you. LinkedIn is a great place to start with several prominent lawyers posting about their matters.
