We're gearing up for our biggest fundraising event of the year - the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins - this weekend. Congratulations to all the Riders and their supporters, who have tipped us over the $8M mark, with a week to go before nearly 2000 Riders don their lycra and hit the road to raise funds for life-changing cancer research at the Perkins. And spare an extra thought for Peter Firth and his Froth Craft Brewery Team, three of whom will be riding the 200km to Mandurah and back on their penny farthings... You can read more about their personal reasons for this monumental effort in this article from PerthNow Local Newspapers. And if you're out and about between Perth and Mandurah this weekend, keep an eye out for the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins fleet and show them your support. https://lnkd.in/gj5FpcPj

Congratulations to Professor Ruth Ganss on the publication of her latest research into the Cancer Microenvironment, published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation today. Prof Ganss's paper, titled "Pericyte phenotype switching alleviates immunosuppression and sensitizes vascularized tumors to immunotherapy in preclinical models" showed that when the dose of anti-cancer drugs was considerably reduced, the tumour initially grew, but then the blood vessels surrounding the tumour normalised, allowing immunotherapy to penetrate the tumour and be more effective. “My team and I are excited to have found new ways of modulating cancer blood vessels with already clinically approved drugs, and now we can hopefully produce an outcome which lends itself to better, more effective treatments for the very sick and prolonging their lives.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gXHTPCem IMAGES: 1. Congratulations A/Prof Gina Ravenscroft, Mid-Career Scientist of the Year, and Nicola Principe, Student Scientist of the Year at the Premier's Science Awards 2024! And congratulations to Dr Kieran Mulroney for being named a Finalist in the Early-Career Scientist of the Year category. Very proud to have you all as part of the Perkins family, striving for longer, healthier and better lives. #WASciAwards #FutureJobsFutureSkills #ScienceWeek #STEM #WesternAustralia
Last night, I attended the 23rd Annual Premier’s Science Awards. It was a wonderful evening, celebrating WA’s brightest scientific minds, including some of our own Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research family. I am immensely proud to congratulate A/Prof Gina Ravenscroft, one of two winners of the Mid-Career Scientist of the Year 2024. Gina has dedicated her career to investigating #neuromuscular diseases, and has made significant discoveries to date, including the discovery of several novel disease genes. Beyond Gina’s academic achievements, the work that she does in this area has a tangible impact for families, providing them with answers about the conditions they face, and opening pathways to potential future treatments. In accepting her award, Gina graciously acknowledged her team and the wider Perkins family for their dedication and support of her work in this important field. Congratulations, Gina, on this remarkable achievement! I would also like to acknowledge Dr Kieran Mulroney who was named as a Finalist in the Early-Career Scientist of the Year category. Kieran was recognised for co-inventing and developing a new method for determining which antibiotic will best treat life-threatening infections in just hours, rather than days, with the potential to save millions of lives. Kieran is also acting as CEO for a Western Australian-based #medtech spin-out company Cytophenix, that will see this technology validated and regulated so that it can reach the people who need it most. And last, but certainly not least, congratulations to Nicola Principe who was named Winner of Student Scientist of the Year. In addition to her role at UWA’s National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD), Nicola is a PhD candidate and works part-time at the Perkins BioDiscovery Centre, nurturing and engaging young people in #STEM. Nicola was also acknowledged for her work in establishing the Western Australian Kindness in Science initiative, promoting a supportive scientific community which has led to changes in the mental health framework for PhD students at The University of Western Australia. #WASciAwards #FutureJobsFutureSkills #ScienceWeek #WesternAustralia
