Australian research initiative catalysing knowledge exchange & translation on human & environmental health -NHMRC funded
About us
The vision of the Healthy Environments And Lives (HEAL) Network is to catalyse research, knowledge exchange and translation into policy and practice that will bring measurable improvements to our health, the Australian health system, and the environment. The HEAL Network is a broad coalition of 100 investigators and more than 30 organisations from across Australia that aims to bridge the gap between knowledge and action by bringing together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wisdom, sustainable development, epidemiology, and data science and communication to address environmental change and its impacts on health across all Australian states and territories. HEAL focuses on participatory solutions-driven research that will provide robust scientific evidence to underpin structural policy and practice changes. This evidence should be based on a holistic assessment of costs and benefits, and distributional effects of policies to support long-term solutions. To meet this need, our collaboration includes Government health and environmental authorities; health sector organisations; Indigenous organisations; and data providers to integrate a complex social, environmental, economic and institutional ecosystem into a cohesive, multidisciplinary research network. HEAL aims to take national and international leadership in environmental change and health research that will provide the evidence, capacity and capability and tools urgently needed to: 1. Protect and improve community health, especially at-risk groups and people in regions and communities disproportionately affected by environmental and climate change; 2. Strengthen health system resilience, preparedness and responsiveness to changing environmental conditions and related diseases, and reduce its environmental impact; 3. Reduce inequities and inequalities within and across communities and generations.

Attention HEAL National Research Network – our new Mentorship Program for 2025 is now open! The HEAL Early- & Mid-Career Researcher (EMCR) Mentorship Program is taking Expressions of Interest to match self-nominated mentees and mentors from across the HEAL Network. This program aims to facilitate a platform to share practical and relevant advice between those in similar situations where preferred, whilst also encouraging participants to connect with others from different disciplines and/or backgrounds. The 2025 Mentorship Program will close on 1st April 2025 and, we will aim to match pairs and inform them by 1st May 2025. The program itself is designed to run for 12 months. All HEAL members and affiliate members are eligible to participate in the program, if you’re not a member it is easy to join the network. Come and read more about this amazing program, apply at: https://lnkd.in/dJFAXmYu

This evening, come and listen to Prof Caitlin Wyrwoll's presentation on the Wellcome Trust funded HEAL National Research Network project - Extreme Heat and Pregnancy Complications (EHPC): harnessing the diverse Australian climate and population for global answers (https://lnkd.in/dWK88qks), it's the second Climate and Health Regional Seminar organised by the C&H team at Wellcome @18:00-19:00 AEST or 19:00-20:00 AEDT. Australia has a diverse climate and population. This context provides a unique opportunity to define the health implications of extreme heat exposure during pregnancy and extrapolate findings to a global context. This multidimensional proposal encompasses individual, population, and discovery science data. Three key aims encompass our proposal: 1) Lived Experience which includes Indigenous and recent migrant knowledge, 2) Environmental Epidemiology across the breadth of Australian climate zones, and 3) Biological Mechanisms utilising our established sheep model of pregnancy in environmentally controlled housing and human samples. These aims, along with community co-design and consultation, will lead to the development of approaches to minimise the adverse effects of extreme heat in pregnancy. Calling all Future Health Research Pioneers! 🚀 We are excited to share that EoIs to the HEAL National Research Network Future Leaders School at the University of Canberra (19-23 May 2025) is now open! (#HEALFLS2025 - https://lnkd.in/dJFAXmYu). Building on the 2024 HEAL FLS, this year's residential school will bring together the successful EMCR applicants from across the HEAL Network for a week of classroom lectures, expert panels, roundtables, problem-based learning, joint sessions with the HEAL Leadership Executives, site visits and more! The HEAL FLS 2025 aims to strengthen inter-disciplinary research capabilities, as well as research-policy translation, communication, negotiation and influencing skills. The course will empower future leaders in the broader health research community and health-service and support sectors to mitigate and adapt to climate change while improving public health in Australia. Targeted at HEAL and HEAL-affiliated Research Fellows, priority will be given to alumni of the HEAL-FLS 2024, First Nations applicants, and applicants who work in remote or rural areas. Successful applicants will be provided funding to cover their travel to and from Canberra, accommodation, selected meals and social events. EOIs will close on Friday 4th April 2025. There are limited spaces for HEAL-funded and affiliated EMCRs to attend, we encourage you to apply early, so you don’t miss out. Please refer to the attached Course Information form and visit the HEAL Website (https://lnkd.in/dJFAXmYu) for more information. Should you have any questions please feel free to reach out to our team (heal@canberra.edu.au). Wishing you the very best!

Climate change has accelerated the frequency and intensity of wildfires around the world – this year alone, the world has watched in horror as fires blazed in Arizona and California in the United States, in Cape Town in South Africa, and Ofunato, in Japan’s Iwate Prefecture. While the fires wreak destruction, the smoke they generate also has huge health impacts on global populations – making CANBREATHE, the project from UC’s (Healthy Environment and Lives) HEAL Global Research Centre, particularly vital. CANBREATHE stands for Climate Attribution of Wildfire Smoke Impacts on Priority Population Health in Southeast Asia and Australia. Launched today at UC, the project is focused on developing climate and health impact assessment tools to communicate the population health impacts from bushfire smoke haze – especially on priority groups like pregnant women, children and Indigenous peoples, who are often disproportionately affected. It links wildfire smoke impacts to climate change using attribution science and community-driven communication – while the health impacts of wildfire smoke are often understood at a community level, understanding how they are caused by climate change is less common. CANBREATHE will inform climate adaptation strategies, while educating and empowering communities. “CANBREATHE will combine climate modelling, health data and storylines to communicate the long-term effects of bushfires and smoke haze pollution exposure.” says Professor Sotiris Vardoulakis, Professor of Environmental Public Health and HEAL Director. Researchers will focus on communications for populations in Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, and Australia. UC Vice-Chancellor Bill Shorten said that CANBREATHE exemplifies the value of partnership and the essence of what a modern university should strive for – to serve its local and global community. “It is imperative that climate change and public health research is not constrained by lines on a map. Strengthening connections with our close neighbours in Southeast Asia is critical,” he says. Distinguished Professor Kim Oanh from the Asia Institute of Technology in Thailand says that “air pollution from forest and agricultural fires is a major public health concern in Southeast Asia.” “These seasonal fires cause deforestation and smoke haze across the region, disproportionally impacting poorer people, especially children. Climate change increases the risk of fires making things worse.” Associate Professor Veronica Matthews, the HEAL Network’s Indigenous Knowledge Systems Lead from the University of Sydney, said that CANBREATHE “is a very exciting opportunity to build on the Network’s momentum of linking climate, environmental and health data with cultural knowledge”. “This project will engage Indigenous peoples and communities, citizen scientists, policymakers and artists to co-design communication tools to educate and empower those communities who are already feeling the impact of climate change.”
