Cool discovery: #NTU scientists have shown that cool paint coatings can significantly enhance pedestrian comfort in urban settings, making areas up to 1.5 degrees Celsius cooler. These innovative coatings, which reflect the sun's heat to minimise surface heat absorption and emission, have been proven to be effective in combating the Urban Heat Island effect, where urban environments become markedly warmer than their surroundings. As the first-of-its-kind real-world study in the tropics, it showcases the effectiveness of cool paint coatings for reducing city heat, moving beyond simulation-based studies or those conducted on scaled-down models. By applying these coatings to roofs, walls, and pavements within an industrial area in Singapore, the NTU team demonstrated a noticeable reduction in temperature by up to two degrees Celsius in the afternoon compared to an adjacent uncoated area. Pedestrian thermal comfort also improved significantly as measured by international standards.
