“I worked with a participant that required 24/7 care when she first came to Helping Solutions. Over a period of time I built a rapport with her and slowly encouraged her to begin walking around a park as she would not leave her home. This was a hard task but over time she became used to the daily walks and enjoyed talking about the wildlife in the park and the flowers. This participant now only has 8 hours of support per day compared to the 24/7 at beginning. Imagine spending almost every hour of your day transporting, overseeing medications, and providing basic care needs (e.g. toileting, showering, feeding, etc.) to someone you care for. For roughly 3 million Australians, this is the reality – except it’s unpaid. As a professional service, we understand the empathy, patience, hard work and challenges that go into caring for individuals – after all, we do this work every day. But for those doing it unpaid, it means taking on the role of supporting the individual's independence, health and wellbeing at the sacrifice of their own personal time, career opportunities, and physical and emotional wellness. Suzi Seragsana began her career as a Support Worker over 30 years ago, and now works as a Client Engagement Manager after transitioning through a variety of engagement and quality assurance roles throughout her career. One thing that Suzi loves most about her role is that she’s one of the first and main points of contact for participants at Helping Solutions. She enjoys engaging new participants and learning about their needs and the goals that they wish to achieve. Additionally, she provides individuals with information about our services, assesses client satisfaction, and helps implement strategies for improvement. In celebration of World Mental Health Day this week (10 October), we are excited to share Emma’s story. Emma has been a Helping Solutions participant for nearly three years now, and her life has completely transformed during that time. Emma has faced many challenges throughout her life. But from a young age, she’s always loved creating art and music. Through the support of Helping Solutions and other service providers, Emma has made her creative passions a reality.
