New scholarships awarded! 🌟💡 Congratulations to 12 up-and-coming researchers from the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research who were awarded top-up scholarships last week! Funded by The Hospital Research Foundation Group, the scholarships were presented by the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Hon Chris Picton MP, and cover research in areas including breast cancer, head and neck cancer, vaccines, surgery and more. 💗 Meet Leah Baylis ✨💗 At just 42, Leah—a young mum and business owner of Champagne Recruitment—faced the unimaginable as she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Thanks to her vigilance and early detection through an MRI, she caught the aggressive cancer before it spread. After her diagnosis, Leah made the decision to have a double mastectomy, removing both breasts to reduce the risk of the cancer returning. Thanks to early detection, Leah didn’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy and is now focused on raising awareness for other women. 🔬 As a mother to a young daughter at high risk, Leah is passionate about advancing research that will provide hope for the next generation. Please join us for the HDA 20th ANNIVERSARY ORATION to be presented by the Hon Kate Ellis on Early Childhood in South Australia: Time for Doing The Doing. Kate will unveil some of the newest research into early childhood development attitudes in South Australia and outline how we now have the evidence base and it is now the critical time for the actions that will transform the lives and futures of our youngest South Australians. Kate is the CEO of the not for profit organisation, Raising Literacy Australia and is the Chair of South Australia’s Early Years Taskforce. Kate also serves as a Non Executive Director on the boards of the Adelaide Crows Football Club, DrinkWise Australia and the Rare Find Foundation. Kate became the youngest woman to be elected to Australia’s House of Representatives when she represented the Division of Adelaide in Federal Parliament from 2004 until 2019. She served as a Minister in both the Rudd and Gillard Governments, holding multiple portfolios including Employment Participation, Sport, the status of Women and notably, her passion portfolio, Early Childhood and Childcare. During her time as a Minister Australia introduced the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), the Early Years Learning Framework, the National Quality Framework and Universal Access to 15 hours preschool.
