Your expert partners for the effective measurement and management of Social Impact.

About us

Working across the private and social sector globally, Huber Social holds ‘Wellbeing’ as the measure of success for humanity and works with organisations to measure and create social impact. Huber Social has extensive experience measuring the wellbeing of people, having successfully applied the system across the public, private and social sectors and across more than 10 countries. Huber Social is committed to scientific, cultural and ethical integrity. We recognise measurement as a scientific pursuit, designing projects to grow collective knowledge, and we are transparent about the power and limitations of findings. To ensure measurement accurately reflects the needs and values of those impacted, we practice cultural safety, working to actively manage our own perspectives and biases and to enable all voices to be heard. To ensure measurement projects ‘do no harm’, all projects are subject to independent review by the Huber Social Ethical Review Board, which is the first and only nationally registered Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) focused on assessing social impact evaluation projects. As part of this commitment to the integrity of measurement, Huber Social led the drafting of the ‘Handbook for Measuring and Valuing Social Impact’, for Standards Australia, along with our partners Oxford University Blavatnik School of Government and the Australian Industry Group. Huber Social is also a member of the UN SDG Impact Assurance Advisory Committee and the UN Private Sector Mechanism of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization for Sustainable Development.

Great to connect with SUIIS, together with Huber friend Giles Gunesekera OAM to discuss the measurement and evaluation of impact. 🌱📈 Thank you to Huber Social Head of Deliver Simon Vaughan for his role in last weekend's presentation. If you are looking for expert guidance on impact measurement, or to build impact measurement and/or management capability within your organisation, please reach out.

Measuring Impact with Precision! Our Semester 2, 2024 cohort started their deep dive into Impact Investing this weekend, focusing on the crucial art of measuring and evaluating impact. 🌱📈 Giles Gunesekera OAM and Simon Vaughan led two dynamic sessions that guided our analysts through key outcomes and topics, including understanding KPIs in impact investing, and exploring frameworks like IRIS+, GIIRS, and the SDGs. They also examined the balance between financial and social/environmental returns, utilising both quantitative and qualitative metrics. A practical activity capped off the sessions, where students analysed real-world impact investment metrics, applying their newfound knowledge to evaluate success. Huge thanks to our insightful speakers, dedicated students and everyone involved for making this session a success! Looking forward to next week as we delve even deeper into the complexities of valuations and decision making!

The environmental and social spheres of current and potential impact are intrinsically interconnected. Huber Social client Fremantle Seaweed grow seaweed to combat climate change and save the ocean. Already operating off the coast of Fremantle the company is poised for expansion and committed to being a force for good. The environmental benefits of Fremantle Seaweed’s work are clear – less carbon in the atmosphere, cleaner oceans and greater biodiversity. The company’s social impacts are yet to be articulated but are just as interconnected with the business’ success. Important is that the growth of the seaweed industry, and associated positive contributions to environmental outcomes, don’t lead to unintended negative social outcomes. To that end, Fremantle Seaweed has partnered with Huber Social to establish a plan to embed social impact measurement into the business to ensure that growth coincides with positive impact for the people Fremantle Seaweed employs, their families and communities. Managing Director Chris De Cuyper said: “Our social impact, if measured, can de-risk future projects. I love that we can measure hope, hope for a future where we, as humans, have taken action to limit the warming effect of planet Earth within 1.5 degrees.” #westernaustralia #interconnected #socialimpact #derisk #impactinvestment #investment #measurewhatmatters

Why should we take a wellbeing approach to impact measurement? Because people and communities do not experience single-issue lives. Life does not adhere to well thought-out linear logic models and measuring outputs and outcomes can be misleading about progress overall. One outcome may be achieved at the expense of another. Instead, life is more accurately understood as a complex system, where all elements interact and impact on one another.[1] Measuring wellbeing requires a systems approach to understanding what is needed to address issues and put people in the best position to fulfil their potential. The domains work together to tell the whole picture of a decision. We don’t look at domains in isolation, but rather consider complementary or incidental outcomes of a decision. Just as we cannot address particular social issues in isolation, likewise people and communities do not experience single-issue lives[2]. We recognise that people’s lives are shaped by their identities, relationships and social factors and therefore to measure wellbeing, we need to measure lived experience. If you want to understand how you can practically apply a wellbeing approach in your context, we are here to support. Thank you to everyone who attended the Best Practice Principles in Social Impact Measurement live webinar today. If you missed it, we've captured some key takeaways from Huber Social Chief Integrity Officer Brett Nan Tie and offer them for you below. We measure Social Impact to: ➡ Understand and maximise our impact ➡ Elevate people’s voices ➡ Make more balanced and transparent decisions ➡ To use Social Impact Management frameworks effectively We measure Social Impact to make better decisions and help direct resources to where they have the most impact To do this, the Social Impact Measurement approach should follow these principles, as outlined in the SA HB 204:2022 Handbook: Measuring and valuing social impact — Guidance on approach and methodologies, for which Huber Social was the lead drafter. 1. Measure Social Impact in terms of Wellbeing – look at the person as a whole 2. Use Subjective Wellbeing as the overarching measure of Social Impact – the common yardstick 3. Measure the Lived Experience - people experience the world in their own ways 4. Practice and embed Cultural Safety – beware of imposing norms or assumptions on others 5. Measurement should be Actionable – directing resources to maximise impact requires action 6. Measurement should be Comparable – understand opportunity costs 7. Measurement should be subject to Assurance – build confidence and rigour 8. Use the Scientific Method – approach measurement as an impartial scientific pursuit A measurement approach does not need to be at the highest level of maturity for every principle, but it does need to be Fit-For-Purpose, have levels of rigour and accuracy that are commensurate with the potential consequences, be relevant to the decisions that need to be made and the context, and test the hypothesis – Impact Thesis or Theory of Change.
