Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) impacts about 40% of women, but it is often shrouded in secrecy and seldom talked about - despite its debilitating nature. Sally M., our POP advocate, shares part of her experience with the condition in the video above, and in today's The Age. Our POP researchers here at Hudson Institute are developing new stem cell-based prevention and treatment options with the potential to revolutionise therapies for pelvic floor regeneration and enable personalised medicine for women.

Leading medical research institute recognised internationally for discovery science and translational research
About us
Hudson Institute is a leading Australian medical research institute recognised internationally for discovery science and translational research. We strive to improve human health through groundbreaking, collaborative, medical research discoveries and the translation of these to real world impact. We are research leaders in five areas of medical need: 1. Inflammation – exploring how your body’s inflammatory response to infection and injury helps you to fight infectious diseases, like COVID-19, autoimmune diseases and cancer. We house Australia’s largest group of inflammation and immunity scientists and clinicians. 1. Reproductive health and pregnancy – answering the tough questions around infertility and pregnancy complications to reduce rates of infertility and stillbirth and to find new treatments for endometriosis and birth trauma. 2. Infant and child health – protecting vulnerable newborns from complications during birth, in the critical early weeks of life and exploring better treatments for childhood diseases. 4. Cancer – investigating how cancer starts developing, and exploring ways to better diagnose, detect and treat life-threatening cases. 5. Hormones and Health – improving the understanding of how your hormonal (endocrine) system maintains its delicate balance to improve your health and wellbeing. Our 443 scientists and students ask questions that push the boundaries of human knowledge to solve complex problems about human disease. Clinical experience based on patient need informs our research enquiry, and our close ties with medical staff and industry support the translation of our discoveries into new preventative approaches, therapies and devices for patient.

Grateful to be inducted into the 2024 Victorian Honour Roll of Women as a Change Agent, together with my inspirational friend Ada Cheung #CelebrateVicWomen #HonourHer For me, this award is also for my supportive family & superb team at Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University. Without the dedicated team of clinicians and researchers (including patient advocates) who are working together to optimise the detection of #PrimaryAldosteronism, change would be impossible.

Congratulations to Monash Health Endocrinologist, Associate Professor Jun Yang, who has been added to the state’s official Honour Roll of Women, as a change agent in the field of hypertension research and treatment 🏆 A/Prof Yang, who is also Head of the Endocrine Hypertension Service at Hudson Institute of Medical Research, joins a group of remarkable Victorian women who share her persistence and determination to make meaningful change. The award comes in honour of A/Prof Yang’s years of work to increase the diagnosis and treatment of Primary Aldosteronism (PA), which is responsible for up to 10 per cent of all cases of hypertension (high blood pressure). PA affects up to 600,000 Australians, with many of them unaware of the condition, meaning that both their PA and their hypertension are likely to go untreated. ‘Under A/Prof Yang's leadership, diagnoses have increased fortyfold, leading to the service being recognised by Monash Health and the Victorian Public Health Awards,’ said Dr Ranjana Srivastava OAM, Monash Health Oncologist. Professor Peter Fuller, Head of Monash Health’s Endocrinology Unit and Hudson Institute’s Centre for Endocrinology and Metabolism, described her as a force of nature whose academic trajectory has been stellar. ‘She has successfully integrated her clinical expertise with discovery science and community outreach to advance the diagnosis of PA, an under-recognised, potentially curable, cause of hypertension,’ said Professor Fuller. ‘(She is) an extraordinary young clinician-researcher who has successfully juggled clinical, family and academic responsibilities to be a role model for young women in science and endocrinology, with a reach and impact well beyond Victoria.’

Thanks to the generosity of one of the nation’s largest retail organisations, Spotlight Group Holdings, Hudson Institute received a cheque for more than $50,000, to help advance our #OvarianCancer research. 🥳 Each year around 1500 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and fewer than half will survive beyond five years. It’s this kind of corporate philanthropy that can make an enormous difference to researchers themselves, the work they do and the lives they’re working to save. Thank you Spotlight Group Holdings, for all your support ❤️ L-R, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Spotlight Group Holdings Morry Fraid, General Manager Investments Spotlight Group Holdings Ben Clark, and ovarian cancer researcher Dr Maree Bilandzic
