Thank you, Sue Bradford, Timothy Goodrick and the team at KPMG Australia, for supporting us across these two important events. Together, we are working towards a world where all children are safe from abuse and exploitation. We look forward to continued collaboration in this essential mission.
Last week, the ICMEC Australia team hosted two impactful events that brought together experts and thought leaders to address critical issues in child protection and exploitation. On Tuesday, Timothy Goodrick and I had the privilege of hosting the SaferAI for Children Summit at KPMG Australia. This was followed by the Symposium on the Disruption of Child Sexual Exploitation. The discussions were both eye-opening and thought-provoking, highlighting the enormity of the challenges ahead. It was a powerful reminder of our shared commitment to protecting children and fighting exploitation through innovation, collaboration, and decisive action. Well done to the ICMEC Australia team on driving the strategy and agenda and we look forward to our continued collaboration. #ICMEC #ChildProtection #SaferAI #ChildExploitation Rosie Campo, Dannielle Kelly, Sarah Minahan, Jeremy Moller, Robertson Colm Gannon, Mikaela Jago, Craig Robertson, Katherine Robinson-Alpe, Nick Kokay & Tamryn Devin

We are incredibly proud to have hosted the inaugural SaferAI for Children Summit today at KPMG. This gathering marks ICMEC Australia’s first event dedicated to exploring the complex role Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in both harming and protecting children. A heartfelt thank you to all the attendees, speakers, and partners who contributed to making this event a resounding success and special thanks to KPMG Australia, our event sponsor. This ground-breaking Summit brought together leaders from government, law enforcement, the AI/tech industries, academia, and not-for-profit organisations to address the urgent issue of AI misuse in child sexual exploitation while also exploring AI's potential as a powerful tool for child protection. Throughout the day, we were engaged in insightful discussions about the evolving role of Generative AI and its significant implications for child protection. ICMEC Australia’s Head of Capacity and Prevention, Dannielle Kelly said the engagement from industry was particularly beneficial, “We are particularly thankful to those who pointed out both the potential risks of AI misuse and the innovative ways it can be helpful. These discussions were so motivating, highlighting the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration in our efforts to safeguard children.” It was an honour to host today’s SaferAI for Children Summit, which provided a platform for vital conversations. We look forward to the real-world impact that will emerge from these discussions. #ChildProtection #SaferAI #ICMECAustralia #Summit2024 #AIForGood #Innovation #ChildSafety #Leadership #ArtificialIntelligence #TechnologyForGood With- Gabriele Visentin, Ian McCartney APM, Adèle D., Paul Griffiths, Dr Catriona Wallace, Toby Dagg, Ashley Katz, Jeannie Marie Paterson, Grace Tame, Colm Gannon, Jon Rouse APM, Mark Dickson, Ryan Black, Simon Fogarty APM, Campbell Wilson, Sean Litton, Mia Garlick, Dr. Rebecca Portnoff, Joel Scanlan, Sue Bradford, Dannielle Kelly, Rosie Campo, Timothy Goodrick, Mikaela Jago, Hiro Noda and Kate Seiffert

At ICMEC Australia, a primary goal is to equip and support all Australian financial service institutions (FSI's) with localised intelligence to bolster their efforts in detecting and reporting child sexual exploitation (CSE). By developing tailored insights and analytics, we enhance FSI's capabilities to effectively identify and combat crimes against children. RedCompass Labs, a UK-based payments expert services company, was one of ICMEC Australia’s first recipients of support from our Child Protection Fund to advance technological approaches to combatting CSE. We partnered with RedCompass Labs to localise their Global RedFlag Accelerator Typologies on CSE into Australia, making them accessible to FSIs via an online portal for the first time. The user testing and beta trial with nearly 50 users from across 12 FSIs has now been successfully completed. We are pleased to share that as an advanced preview, these localised CSE typologies will be available for free to the entire financial sector starting next week. RedCompass Labs will provide a live demo at our Symposium on October 30. To express your interest, please email us at info@icmec.org.au.

We thank eSafety Commissioner for their continued leadership in protecting children online by championing the development of mandatory industry codes that safeguard young Australians from harmful and graphic content. 🙏
Have your say on how the online industry will protect children from graphic pornography and other high-impact content 🔞 Australia's peak communications, digital and video game industry associations have released draft codes for community consultation. Earlier this year, eSafety issued notices to industry associations requesting that they draft mandatory measures to prevent children from encountering material they are not ready to see and are too young to understand. eSafety also asked that the codes establish measures which would empower all Australians with better options and tools to manage their exposure to certain online material. While they focus on pornography, the draft codes also relate to other high-impact material including themes of suicide, self-harm and disordered eating. The draft codes apply to app stores; apps and websites - including porn websites; search engines; social media services; hosting services; internet service providers; instant messaging, SMS, chat, multi-player gaming, online dating services; and equipment providers. The draft codes are available at www.onlinesafety.org.au and the industry associations are inviting feedback from consumer organisations, civil society groups, academics, industry, parents and community members. After the industry associations provide the codes for registration, the eSafety Commissioner will assess each code to ensure they provide appropriate community safeguards. If any do not, the Commissioner can move to determining standards instead. This is the second phase of codes being developed under Australia's Online Safety Act, following a first phase of industry codes and standards which require industry to take meaningful steps to tackle child sexual exploitation, terrorist and violent extremist material.

ICMEC Australia delivered training to Cambodian Prosecutors and Judges in early October in Phnom Penh, Cambodia as part of an Australian Attorney General’s Department and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade MAP-TNC funded workshop. In partnership with the Cambodian Ministry of Justice, the “Crimes Against Children Workshop” aimed to raise awareness of the current crimes against children landscape and provide modern approaches, best practices, and protocols for effective prosecutorial success. The workshop was officially opened by the Cambodian Secretary of State, His Excellency Keng Somarith, alongside the Deputy Ambassador to Australia, Bridget Collier, and other honourable members of the Cambodian Ministry of Justice. ICMEC Australia’s Head of Data, Warren Bulmer, an international instructor in computer and internet-facilitated crime, led the fifty participants on a range of topics intended to develop the capacity of participants to investigate and prosecute online child sexual exploitation crimes. Topics covered included technical considerations and terms, the global child sexual exploitation landscape, an overview of investigative methods and financial investigations of child sexual abuse cases. The workshop also featured presentations from the Homeland Security Investigations and local Cambodian child protection NGOs, The A21 Campaign Cambodia and APLE Cambodia. In Phnom Penh, ICMEC Australia staff valued hearing first-hand the experiences of prosecutors and judges from across Cambodia. We look forward to maintaining these networks and identifying opportunities for further collaboration and uplift across the Asia-Pacific region.
