About us
New South Wales Chapter of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society's objectives are scientific, literary, and educational in character. The Society strives for the advancement of the theory and practice of robotics and automation engineering and science and of the allied arts and sciences, and for the maintenance of high professional standards among its members, all in consonance with the Constitution and Bylaws of the IEEE and with special attention to such aims within the Field of Interest of the Society. Our Mission is to foster the development and facilitate the exchange of scientific and technological knowledge in Robotics and Automation that benefits members, the profession and humanity. Our Vision is to be the most recognized and respected global organization in Robotics and Automation. RAS strives to advance innovation, education, and fundamental and applied research in robotics and automation. Robotics focuses on systems incorporating sensors and actuators that operate autonomously or semi-autonomously in cooperation with humans. Robotics research emphasises intelligence and adaptability to cope with unstructured environments. Automation research emphasises efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability, focusing on systems that operate autonomously, often in structured environments over extended periods, and on the explicit structuring of such environments. The Society provides aid in promoting close cooperation and exchange of technical information among its Members and Affiliates, and to this end holds meetings for the presentation of papers and their discussion, sponsors appropriate periodicals and special technical publications, and through its committees studies and provides for the needs of its members and affiliates.

Fantastic profile on Heba Khamis from Contactile by Natasha Gillezeau in Missing Perspectives. So much to unpack about her journey but I love this reference to being a Cicada Innovations resident.... "What an incredible resource, and the collisions that can happen. " [Natasha] "So the problem is - I usually only leave the office to go to the bathroom - and I often run into people on the way to the bathroom. The timing is hilarious. " [Heba] I'm pretty sure she's talking about running into me on those bathroom breaks and the long conversations that follow 😁 Love those collisions Heb and what you're building. https://lnkd.in/g9qwsan4

Reposting the transcript of a talk I recently gave on using AI to accelerate materials discovery. In the coming decade, many industries from cleantech to consumer devices will benefit ...
"Generating new, unknown materials via generative techniques is going to be a huge opportunity. New materials are going to be discovered on the scale of weeks in the coming decades, as opposed to the years it takes today." Material discoveries could impact: - Improved batteries - Petrochemicals: transport fuels, polymers (plastics, resins, fibers), detergents, coatings, construction chemicals, and #medicine - Synthetic fuels (air travel) - Carbon removal - Catalyzers (green hydrogen) - Green steel - Clean concrete See more insights from Matt Uyttendaele, the Director of the #AI for #Chemistry group at Meta: https://lnkd.in/ejtn3YbX We were honored to have him speak at our Annual General Meeting earlier this year. His group applies machine learning to material discovery for several applications: clean hydrogen, sorbents for direct air capture, and next-generation displays.

Australian soldiers trial robots to protect our borders "Soldiers from the Australian Army’s Regional Force Surveillance Group (RFSG) Pilbara Regiment are trialling an uncrewed robot. The Ground Uncrewed System, known as GUS, is an Australian-developed surveillance robot. GUS is equipped with cameras and sensors capable of providing persistent surveillance for more than 30 continuous days using battery power. An on-board liquid fuel generator recharges the battery when it is low to extend GUS’s mission endurance even further. Director-General Future Land Warfare, Brigadier James Davis, said the Australian Army is committed to developing capabilities that exploit new and emerging technologies. “Placing this equipment in the hands of the end users such as RFSG allows us to learn by doing with all the challenges of tasks and the environment” Brigadier Davis said. ..."
