Last week Darin Lovett and Matthew Richardson participated in Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA) Southern Space 2024. On Day 1, Darin Lovett led the Earth Observation panel exploring current capabilities and opportunities. The panel discussed the concept of Australian Resilience and the importance of "burden sharing," highlighting how Australia can not only rely on foreign capabilities but also add value to allies and partners, thereby contributing to collective deterrence efforts. On Day 2, Dr Matthew Richardson spoke on the Skilling and Education for a Modern Space Workforce panel. He highlighted the need for Australian universities to adapt their aerospace engineering programs, which have traditionally focused on aeronautics, to include more space-specific content. He highlighted that despite the challenges universities face, there’s a significant opportunity for growth, especially through initiatives like iLAuNCH, which is committed to developing a new undergraduate major in space engineering. Finally, he underscored the benefits of diversifying qualifications and skill sets in the space sector, as well as the value of capstone projects in providing students with industry-relevant experience while helping companies explore "side projects". What insightful panel discussions with a selection of great panelists. Exciting advancements are taking place for long-range imagery to capture rockets in flight. 🚀 In this latest iLAuNCH Trailblazer project, the University of Southern Queensland is partnering with Southern Launch to develop long range imaging capability to gather high-quality, high-resolution data and images of rocket launches at their launch facilities. The project will develop imaging systems along with the tracking and data fusion systems that permits us to follow the rocket on the way up, allowing us to capture exceptional quality video and imagery. This imagery can be used for publicity purposes, or in the event of an incident, provide important information for analysis. We are excited to see live imagery of rocket launches from Southern Launch facilities in South Australia in the next year! We had a BLAST at our first Space Family Fun Day in Springfield on Sunday for National Science Week. Participants learnt about space whilst making their own galactic slime, launched air rockets, viewed the sun through a solar telescope, became astronauts for the day whilst exploring the ISS in VR, had their faces painted with rockets, showed off their knowledge in a space quiz and listened to Matthew Richardson's talk on building a career in space. We are excited to run it all again in Toowoomba this Sunday thanks to Inspiring Australia Queensland.
