Australia’s chief scientist Dr Cathy Foley gave an important address at this year's International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney, urging the country’s mining and metals industry leaders to properly frame the problem they are trying to solve for the world to give themselves a shot at delivering a new economic miracle. Or risk being exposed to the wrong kind of “Kodak moment”. “Australia’s mining sector is known for its innovation,” she told the Mining, Metals and the Circular Economy forum at IMARC 2024. “But now it’s time to double down on that reputation and do everything we can to ensure innovation drives the coming two decades, whether that's innovation in business models, extraction techniques, processing or circular economy technologies." Last week, IMARC welcomed over 100 recent graduates and undergraduates to our NextGen Leaders Program. A big thank you to WA Mining Club for your support!
🎉 What an unforgettable experience at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) 2024 last week! 🎉 I'm incredibly grateful to the WA Mining Club for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a transformative event. Special thanks to Joshua Brennan for organizing the trip and to Barry Upton (aka Dad) for chaperoning us during the conference. Shoutout to Dani Tamati, Tim Taylor, Nat Taylor, Jordan Pedley and Cassandra Brennan for all the support and work behind the scenes. And a massive thank you to our amazing sponsors — Robit Plc, Grounded, and Resource Super—for making this all possible! 🙌 A special thank you to Sherene Asnasyous, Brooke Kirwin, and their team for organizing such a dynamic and diverse conference—it was an absolute honour to be part of it! Over the three days, I had the privilege of: - Guiding the next generation of junior students around the expo, co-chaperoning Jasmin Bentink, and opening their eyes to our amazing industry while engaging with CoRE Learning Foundation, Indigenous Women in Mining and Resources Australia, and the fun-filled Epiroc bogger! - Moderating a panel discussion on preparing the next generation for mining careers as a part of the NextGen Leaders Program, where we explored the education gap in mining exposure. A key takeaway was the advice for future generations: focus on respect, communication, and curiosity to succeed in this ever-evolving industry. So thank you Suzy Urbaniak OAM, Emily Flores and Professor Ismet Canbulat for such a meaningful discussion. - Visiting the Weir Motion Metrics booth, where I learned about their cutting-edge technology in fragmentation—something that’s directly related to the software I used for my thesis. This was a fantastic opportunity to see the real-world applications of my research. The best part about this trip for me was re-connecting and meeting so many wonderful people as well as engaging in meaningful conversations that will undoubtedly shape the future of not only my own but also the mining and resources. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so special — Jasmin Bentink (my buddy for the last four days), Yasmin Fox-Mooney, Jack Nalty, Michael Dyer, and James Fox. I can't wait to see what the world has in store for each one of you as future leaders in the industry. A special thank you to WA Fuel Supplies for always fueling our energy when we needed it the past three days! The International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) 2024 was truly unforgettable, and I’m excited to carry these insights and connections forward into the future of our industry. 🚀💡 #IMARC2024 #NextGenLeaders #WAMiningClub #STEM

Congratulations to Jasmin Bentink on being awarded the Epiroc Women in Mining Scholarship for 2025! 🎉 Last week at IMARC, Jasmin joined us as one of our NextGen Leaders. She truly exemplified the spirit of the NextGen Leaders Program by speaking on the conference program, engaging with exhibitors on the Expo Floor, mentoring our NextGen Junior Program during an exhibitor floor walk, and making the most of Australia’s largest mining event.
We are proud to share that Jasmin Bentink has been awarded the Epiroc Women in Mining Scholarship for 2025! 🏆 Jasmin is a second-year Environmental Science student at the University of Western Australia, specialising in Environmental Science and Management. Growing up in a regional area, her environmental passion was kindled early, driving her academic and professional pursuits. She aspires to work in mine closure and rehabilitation upon graduation, combining her love for the environment with the mining industry's needs. Congratulations Jasmin, we are thrilled to have you as our Epiroc Women in Mining Ambassador and look forward to seeing your success! 👏👏 #EWIMScholarship #WomeninMiningAmbassador

I’m thrilled to have attended #IMARC2024 in Sydney as a NextGen delegate and a mentor for the NextGen Future Leaders Speed Mentoring event. It was inspiring to connect with emerging leaders who are just as passionate about shaping a sustainable and innovative future for mining. IMARC, Australia’s largest mining event, hosted over 9,000 delegates from more than 115 countries — showcasing Australia’s commitment to sustainable mining practices, net-zero goals and critical mineral development. This premier event truly drives collaboration, investment and fresh ideas for a resilient, future-ready industry. As a mentor, I had the privilege of sharing my early career insights, discussing industry challenges and offering advice to emerging leaders on networking strategies and the wealth of opportunities within the industry. Supporting the next generation is essential as we work toward meaningful transformations in mining, especially in areas like ESG and sustainable mineral practices. It’s truly inspiring to see so many dedicated young leaders like me at the event, all sharing the same commitment and drive to make a real positive impact in the mining industry. Our perspectives are just as important as anyone else's, as we are the future of this industry and have the potential to drive meaningful change. A big thank you to Chris, Marianne, Claire and the Austmine team for inviting me once again to this impactful event and for their support in my professional development this year. Engaging with exhibitors and reconnecting with professionals like Dani and the WA Mining Club Young Professionals, Suzy (CoRE Learning Foundation), Christina Coleman (Indigenous Women in Mining and Resources Australia), Jessica Keast, Flavia (Fleet Space Technologies), Jon Robbeson, AusIMM management teams and student chapters, and many others was a highlight of my experience. From meeting international delegates to lifting a 12kg gold bar showcased by ABC Refinery, the week was filled with invaluable moments. I also had the privilege of hearing from industry legend Mitch Hooke, who shared valuable insights with us NextGen leaders. The NextGen panel discussion emphasised the need to improve public perceptions, adopt a multidisciplinary approach, and educate students about the positive role of mining in Australia from an early age — key factors for moving forward. The IMARC Gala Dinner, where I joined the NextGen table sponsored by Newmont Corporation, perfectly closed an inspiring week at IMARC. I look forward to staying connected with this community and continuing to support the future leaders of mining!
