Good to see more media coverage today of the critical issue of restoring funding for Indigenous boarding schools. These schools provide essential education for over 2,300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote communities. Boarding funding expires this year, yet no long-term solution has been announced. Without urgent action, the future of these students is in jeopardy. We cannot afford to let these students fall behind! 📢 It's time for the Government to act NOW to support these vital schools and ensure they continue their essential work in #ClosingTheGap. #IndigenousEducation #SupportBoardingSchools #IndependentSchoolsAustralia #FairFunding #SaveIndigenousSchools

Associate Professor David Hastie sheds light on the misconception that non-government schools are to blame for the underfunding of government schools. He argues that this narrative is not only simplistic but also misleading. Australia’s unique educational landscape, with a higher proportion of non-government school enrolments compared to the OECD average, naturally results in more spending on non-government education. But the portrayal of a zero-sum game where non-government school funding detracts from government school resources is wrong. Hastie highlights that the Commonwealth has largely upheld its end of the bargain, while states have generally failed to deliver agreed funding to government schools. Australia needs an informed and constructive dialogue about education funding. It’s time to move beyond the divisive rhetoric and work towards solutions that benefit all students in all school sectors. #independentschools #independnetschoolsaustralia #independentschoolfunding Link: https://lnkd.in/gen6iqBg

Article in today’s Australian reporting that ISA is calling on the Federal Government to immediately restore critical funding for Indigenous boarding schools, which are at serious risk due to discontinued grants. These schools provide essential education for over 2,300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote communities. Without urgent action, the future of these students is in jeopardy. Funding expires this year, yet no long-term solution has been announced. We cannot afford to let these students fall behind! 📢 It's time for the Government to act NOW to support these vital schools and ensure they continue their essential work in #ClosingTheGap. #IndigenousEducation #SupportBoardingSchools #IndependentSchoolsAustralia #FairFunding #SaveIndigenousSchools https://lnkd.in/g9SzUx2f

Today, Independent Schools Australia’s National Consultative Group brought together voices from across our diverse school sector to discuss key challenges and opportunities. Everything from student wellbeing, the critical issue of teacher shortages in rural and regional areas, and our advocacy plans moving forward were discussed. It was refreshing to see as a sector that we are all passionate about supporting families, students and ensuring a strong education system for all, whether it was catering for the growing demand for our sector or putting an end to the blame game that some fuel between Independent and public schools – our goal is simple: helping all kids thrive. #EducationForAll #SupportingStudents #IndependentSchoolsAustralia #WorkingTogether

It’s disappointing to see, yet again, the AEU using the complexity of school funding as a smokescreen to launch misguided and misleading attacks on individual non-government schools and their communities. ACARA, which operates the MySchool website from which the AEU report draws its data, specifically warns against using the data to make direct funding comparisons between schools, even those in the same sector, due to the difference in funding and operating models. The AEU has disregarded that warning and used the data to create misleading sector comparisons. Independent schools serve diverse students and communities, with diverse needs and so there are many variables in how funding is determined. But the simple fact is that government schools will always receive more government funding than non-government schools on a per student basis, where they enrol an identical cohort of students. The latest data clearly shows that nationally, Independent school students receive an average of $12,160 in government funding, while public school students receive $22,510. With a federal election looming it’s critical to understand the policy positions of all parties. Today in Canberra we were joined at the National Press Club by ISA Board members Christopher Mountford, Andrew Wrigley, Tony Crehan, Cheryl Salter and Rachel Holthouse to watch Green’s leader Adam Bandt lay out the Australian Greens’ proposed “Robin Hood reforms,” which target large corporations.

This week, First Nations education leaders from the state and territory Associations of Independent Schools gathered with Independent Schools Australia on Ngunnawal land in Canberra to discuss the important ongoing work of Reconciliation. Reconciliation Australia joined our gathering and we took the opportunity to discuss the benefits and challenges of many issues, including on-Country learning, Indigenous boarding for students with no high school option in their community, professional learning for teachers, and the ongoing development and implementation of Reconciliation Action Plans. We celebrated First Nations art and deepened our knowledge of Australia’s history with a tour of the First Australians Gallery at the National Museum of Australia. Here we had the opportunity to connect with Adam Duncan , the Museum’s Education Manager and author of The Bunyip and the Stars, a story which is steeped in Aboriginal storytelling and history. ISA remains committed to leading Reconciliation in the Independent school sector, with the goal of strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.
