Our webinar starts in one hour! ⏰ Join us at 10am for Infrastructure Victoria’s webinar, ‘Sharing is caring: how sharing more school grounds can unlock benefits for the community’. In this discussion, we will explore the findings and recommendations in our latest research report, 'Getting more from school grounds: sharing places for play and exercise'. Outdoor space on state government school land presents a huge opportunity to give more people access to open space to gather and socialise. Our recommendations to the Victorian Government focus on supporting schools to help manage the costs of sharing outdoor grounds with the community. Outdoor sports courts and ovals on state government school land use about 450 hectares of space in Melbourne alone – a total land value of about $6.6 billion. School grounds are an under-used community asset - especially in areas where there's limited open space. Our latest research report, 'Getting more from school grounds: sharing places for play and exercise' found that sharing more school grounds with the community after hours can benefit many more people in cities like Melbourne. And, as regional cities continue to grow, people in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo can also benefit. Our research found 1.7 million Melburnians cannot currently access a community sports field within a 10-minute walk. If all government school grounds were open, nearly half a million of those people would have access. This is not new. Most government schools are already open to the community outside of school hours. But their distribution is uneven across Melbourne. Schools in the outer northern, western and south-eastern suburbs are less likely to be open. What's more, the research showed people in these suburbs are also less likely to have alternative sports grounds nearby and less likely to get a healthy level of regular exercise. Our recommendations to the Victorian Government focus on supporting schools to help manage the costs of sharing outdoor grounds with the community. Finding an affordable home in established suburbs is becoming increasingly difficult for many Victorians, especially for those on moderate incomes, families and first home buyers. Victorians want more housing choices close to existing infrastructure, family and friends. One in 5 households say they would trade a detached home in a new suburb for a townhouse or apartment for the same price closer to city centres. Our research report 'Our home choices' makes 7 housing recommendations to the Victorian Government, including rezoning for housing close to public transport and better apartment standards and child-friendly designs. We would like to congratulate Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) and its members on the launch of the Victorian ACCO Model at Parliament House yesterday! The Victorian ACCO Model is holistic, integrated, strengths-based, and trauma-informed. It combines culturally safe healthcare with wrap-around services to tackle the ongoing health and wellbeing gaps faced by Aboriginal Victorians. Visit the VACCHO website to find out more about the Model: https://lnkd.in/gCv-YnFK
VACCHO launched the new holistic model of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) on 16 October 2024. The launch event was hosted by Sheena Watt MLC, who was joined by other government Ministers, Shadow Ministers and representatives across Parliament, to celebrate the groundbreaking work that has been undertaken by Victorian ACCOs for over 50 years. VACCHO CEO Dr. Jill Gallagher AO said it was a momentous occasion having senior government decision makers in the room, to draw their attention to the importance of the Aboriginal health and wellbeing sector. “It is vital that Governments empower and invest in ACCOs, so that they can continue to champion Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing,” she said. It's National Ride2Work Day and there are some wheely good reasons to spring into riding to work! Not only is cycling great for your health and wellbeing, it can also help cut travel time for motorists, reduce air pollution from greenhouse gases and ease crowding on public transport. One of the recommendations in Victoria's 30-year infrastructure strategy is to provide better active transport options across metropolitan and regional Victoria. Renewable energy generation is continuing to break records in the National Electricity Market (NEM). On Monday, renewables hit a new instantaneous peak in market share contributing 74% of energy to the market for 30 minutes. It was the fourth record in renewables penetration set in a week. At the time of the latest record, rooftop solar was 45%, wind was 17%, grid-scale solar was 11% and hdryo was a further 2% of generation across the NEM. The peaks in renewables penetration are also pushing fossil fuels to new lows in the east-coast energy mix. Victoria, like the rest of Australia, is moving away from coal to reduce pollution which contributes to global warming and increases the severity and frequency of extreme weather. On Sunday, the share of coal in energy penetration for Australia's main grid hit a new record low of 24.2%. In Victoria, the government has set a target for 65% renewable energy generation by 2030. In 2022–23, renewable energy reached 37.8% of Victoria’s electricity generation – over twice as much as 5 years ago. Modifying the electricity transmission network is needed to continue the rapid roll out of solar and wind as they increase their market share.
