The South Australian Research and Innovation Fund, set up in 2018 and managed by the Department of State Development, is undergoing its first review in six years. The $56 million fund aims to support research and innovation in sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and energy. Professor Göran Roos, an experienced advisor on industry policy, is leading the review which started in late July and is expected to finish by early November. This review will evaluate the fund’s effectiveness, examine current funding guidelines, and compare it to similar programs in other states. It will also explore the potential for new programs and strategic co-investments, particularly focusing on defence, hydrogen, and critical technologies. The review includes assessing the Seed-Start Program and considering other startup support frameworks. While the review is ongoing, the fund will continue operating as usual. A groundbreaking $3.45 million sterile sheep blowfly breeding facility has opened on Kangaroo Island, a World First aiming to eradicate the harmful sheep blowfly that causes significant economic losses and impacts animal health. Operated by the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the facility is now producing sterile blowflies, with mass releases planned for September. When fully operational in 2025, it will produce up to 50 million sterile flies per week. The project, funded by several agricultural organizations, uses the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to control the blowfly population. The facility, built using shipping containers, can be redeployed across South Australia after the project on Kangaroo Island concludes. https://lnkd.in/gkn7f_Br
