  • This week has been immense for Domestic Violence Awareness. But in supervision and in conversations with colleagues, I have noticed a swirling anxious anger and exhaustion. I believe it's because we feel connected to a shared sense of grief. But I also know that being uncomfortable sparks change. So I am also hopeful that this collective feeling is a transition point for our community. Thank you to all frontline workers and policy makers addressing family and domestic violence. Your dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed. #clinicalsupervision #nurseleaders #DFV

  • 🙋♀️ Ok so maybe I don't always love it! But I don't love avoiding them either! 🌟 As nurse leaders, we often find ourselves in the midst of difficult conversations. Whether it's about improving clinical care, ensuring patient safety, navigating ethical dilemmas, or making tough staffing decisions, these conversations are a crucial part of our role. 🔍 While they may not come naturally, they can be learned and cultivated. Getting comfortable with discomfort for the right reasons is key. 💡 Clinical supervision can be a valuable tool in guiding and navigating these discussions. It helps clarify the outcomes you seek, approach them from a strengths-based perspective, and keep the client at the centre while ensuring the safety of your staff. 💬 How do you approach difficult conversations in your leadership role? Share your thoughts and experiences! #NurseLeadership #ClinicalSupervision #DifficultConversations

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COACH | I help high achievers beat burnout and find freedom | AUTHOR

How to unlock the leadership superpower of psychological flexibility     In a recent coaching session Dan* expressed a huge amount of frustration and dissatisfaction at his (in)ability to get cut through on a performance issue with one of his team.   That frustration was affecting his relationship with his team member, and unsurprisingly, he wasn’t getting the result he was looking for. The frustration was also affecting his self-image as a leader who both cared about others, and was a high performer. He tends to get twitchy when performance is not on track, and why wouldn’t he? It’s his job as leader to make sure team members know what they need to do, pull their weight and work well together and that was eroding.   He felt like he was between a rock and a hard place. So we shifted the conversation from the team member to Dan and what he could do about how he was defining the problem and responding to it.   According to Dan, his frustration was caused by the team member’s resistance to Dan’s coaching and direction. That’s one legitimate way to look at it. Yet only one way. That way was at an impasse, what Dan was trying wasn’t working. He needed to get some flexibility into his thinking about what was happening, and what he could do about it.   To do that we: 📌 Stood up and took a step back from our chairs to signal a shift in approach 📌 Started playing around with different ways to define the situation, including Dan’s role in it. How else to see this situation? 📌 We named his feelings, especially the negative ones, listed as many as we could and debated their value to what he needed to do. He thought that he shouldn’t feel inadequate, it was uncomfortable, but simply by using that word instead of frustrated opened up new ways to explore what he could do to feel more adequate in his actions. 📌 This prompted an opening up of what he could learn about himself and his leadership.   Psychological flexibility is my go-to coaching technique, because it opens up the power of choice, and that increases agency and gives a sense of momentum.   Dan’s reported back that his follow-up conversation with his team member was much more constructive, because he’d shifted his thinking, and he was optimistic that they would respond more positively.   Read more about how to increase your psychological flexibility here: https://lnkd.in/g4wRBT5Y   🤔 How do you remain flexible when your leadership is tested?   * Not his real name #psychologicalflexibility #LinkedInnewsaustralia #leadership
