Every year, more than 35,500 Victorians will be diagnosed with cancer, and 11,000 will die from cancer. The Economics of Cancer Collaboration (EOCC) between the Institute’s Deakin Health Economics team and Cancer Council Victoria, investigates the cost-effectiveness and economic impact of health services related to cancer screening, prevention, treatment, and patient support. The EOCC partnership is estimated to have potentially saved more than 52,000 life years, and $179 million in healthcare costs over the lifetime of Australians, largely due to continued provision of key initiatives including Quitline, SunSmart and ongoing media campaigns. 📢 New Publication Alert! Excited to share our latest publication, "Absenteeism and Presenteeism Among Caregivers of Chronic Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" 🚀. Our study delves into the productivity impact on caregivers of patients with chronic conditions, focusing on absenteeism and presenteeism. Using a systematic review and meta-analysis, we explored data from 23 relevant works that highlight significant productivity loss. Key findings include: - Absenteeism: 14% - Presenteeism: 32% - Overall Work Productivity Loss (WPL): 44% 📉 This research is a step forward in quantifying these impacts through Productivity-Adjusted Life Year (PALY), an emerging metric that captures disease effects on productivity. We hope it informs future research on caregiver productivity and shapes policies to support this crucial yet often overlooked group. 🔦 Spotlight on effective engagement series Did you know using a communication order can help alleviate anxiety in an online discussion? This was something we learned working alongside Simon J. Green and Mac from Youth Disability Advocacy Service.  A communication order supports organised conversation in an online space, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to share their thoughts or opt out of the discussion. Implementing a communication order might look a little bit like this in practice: 1. Write the participants names in a random order (with a number next to each name) in the chat function of your online space. Make sure you do this at the start of the discussion.   2. Explain to the participants that the order will be used when they are being invited to respond to questions.  3. Reassure participants that they’re welcome to skip their turn at any time.  4. Re-paste the communication order in the chat throughout the session so it can always be seen. Read more about our work with YDAS and other community organisations in our recent article 👇  

🔦 Spotlight on effective engagement series Working with Anasina Gray-Barberio at Engage Pasefika taught us about Talanoa. Instead of calling the gathering a focus group, we called it a Talanoa. Did you know... - Talanoa is a traditional concept or framework from Pacific Island cultures that refers to a form of storytelling or dialogue.   - It involves open, informal, and inclusive conversation where people share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences in a respectful and empathetic manner.   - During Talanoa, participants build trusting relationships and deepen knowledge by fostering empathy and understanding.   - It creates a stable and inclusive dialogue, providing a safe space grounded in mutual respect, which serves the greater good.  Thank you Anasina for teaching us and sharing your cultural practices. Congratulations Professor Catherine Bennett on the release of the Covid-19 Inquiry Report yesterday. Your dedication and hard work has been reflected in the results. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said : “I thank the panel members for their dedicated work. I also thank the many individuals and organisations who shared their experiences of the pandemic.” The Inquiry has 9 guiding recommendations and 26 actions for both short term and longer-term work to improve Australia’s preparedness for future pandemics. The Government will release a response after careful consideration of the Inquiry’s findings and recommendations. In the interim, the Albanese Government will deliver a new Australian Centre for Disease Control, which is one of the central recommendations of the independent Inquiry.
