Establishing Emergency Medicine as a Specialty in Spain: A Case Study Federico CAPRILES, Manuel VASQUEZ LIMA, Oscar MIRÓ Introduction The establishment of Emergency Medicine (EM) as a specialty in Spain was a long and complex process (Table 1), driven by advocacy (1), strategic alliances, and educational reforms. Overcoming resistance, navigating regulatory challenges, and raising awareness within both the public and medical community were key aspects of this effort. The need for a distinct EM specialty was recognized decades ago as hospital emergency services expanded, and medical emergencies became more complex. In the early 1980s, the first advocates for an EM specialty emerged in Spain, drawing inspiration from models in other European countries, including the UK and the United States (2,3,4). The Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES) was established in 1987 (5). Alongside regional EM societies, SEMES became a leading advocate for the formal recognition of EM as a distinct specialty. The pioneers in these organizations tirelessly promoted specialized training in emergency and urgent care, organizing conferences, courses, and workshops to improve the skills of professionals in the field. To enhance Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, IFEM has developed an Online Event Sponsorship Initiative. We understand that Emergency Physicians, Trainees and other Emergency Medical Care Workers from low-income countries aren’t always financially able to attend our events. To ensure our events are more accessible, our goal is to secure a sponsor for every IFEM online event. This generous sponsorship allows us to provide free registration to Emergency Medical Care Workers who otherwise couldn't attend. This initiative plays a critical role in ensuring IFEM can provide highly accessible resources and education to Emergency Medical Care Workers in all countries and resources settings. Our event sponsorship initiative requires applicants to fit into one of the three categories below. IFEM Model Framework for the Accreditation of Training Sites for Emergency Medicine The IFEM Core Curriculum and Education Committee has developed curricula for undergraduate education, graduate education and continuing professional development in Emergency Medicine. Graduate education is delivered in various settings, including training sites based in a clinical Emergency Department. In order to ensure the quality of the training that is delivered at these sites, mature training systems have a system that accredits these sites for training purposes. This paper presents a model framework for this accreditation process that may be used by national societies to develop their own process. This paper also includes a comparison of this framework with the accreditation standards of established programs in IFEM member societies. Download: https://buff.ly/3Bim4Bf
