About us
Intrepid Travel offers sustainable experience-rich travel via more than 900 trips on all seven continents. As a certified B Corp, we're a business that balances purpose and profit. We are the largest global adventure tour operator with a network of 27 destination management companies (DMCs) and a not-for-profit foundation. Majority owned by its co-founders and staff, Intrepid has been taking small groups to travel the local way, on real-life experiences for more than three decades. Through our global DMC network, our expert teams operate the majority of our trips, as well as tours on behalf of other leading travel brands. Our not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, has raised over AUD $15.5m for 160 charities around the world since 2002. We've been carbon neutral since 2010, and in 2020 we became the only tour operator with verified science based targets – these are ambitious 2035 emissions reduction targets, in line with a 1.5°C future. We’re proud to share we’ve been named a finalist in the AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list for 2024! 🎊 This year’s list shines a spotlight on businesses that are shaping industry and culture through innovation and challenging the status quo. Innovation at Intrepid means finding new ways to create positive change through the joy of travel. Our carbon labelling initiative was recognised by The Australian Financial Review for making sustainability a standard in travel and inspiring industry-wide change. We were named alongside business leaders including Scalene, Samsara Eco and Quantaco who are shifting the needle towards greater, more positive business impact and inspiring us to do more in the future. #AFRBOSS

As a member of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, we’re proud to support the UN Global Compact Network Australia's flagship sustainability event, which is aimed at equipping businesses to navigate challenges at the intersection of net zero, nature positive, human rights and governance. We believe the conversations at UNiting Business LIVE Australia: Sustainability in Action, will be critical for Australia’s C-Suite, board members, sustainability teams, and emerging and future sustainability leaders. We look forward to hearing from UN Global Compact CEO Sanda Ojiambo and our CEO James Thornton at the Leadership Dinner and our GM of Purpose Sara King on a panel sharing insights into communicating sustainability.

Earlier this year, we launched a new collaboration with Market Development Facility (MDF) to support female empowerment in Sri Lanka. With the support of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, we’ve now completed our first workshop aimed at training and career development in the local tourism industry. Eleven women participated in the course covering tour leading basics, responsible travel and customer service, and we were excited to award two talented leaders full scholarships to obtain their tour guiding licenses. We’re looking forward to rolling this initiative out across all nine provinces in Sri Lanka, with the goal of bringing more women on board as tour leaders in the future. 🙏 Poornaka Delpachitra Natalie Kidd Sara King Sarah Wallace

The Intrepid Foundation was proud to be the charity partner of TTG Media's Travel Industry Awards in London, where our own team took home Touring and Adventure Operator of the Year and the Positive Impact Award! 🎊 In particular, our emergency appeal which raised over £330,000 following the earthquake in Morocco last September was recognised for supporting vulnerable communities and our long-term local partners to rebuild. Plus, attendees raised £6,500 and counting for important causes like these on the night. Together, we’re creating positive impact through the joy of travel, community and connection. ❤️ Biheng Zhang Hazel McGuire Chloe Berman Joanna Reeve

We believe travel can be a force for good and we are excited to have joined forces with local, India-based NGO ACCESS Development Services to invest in the Holy City Rickshaw program, a new initiative empowering women into tour leading jobs in Varanasi. This is important as women still only contribute around 18% to the country’s GDP and are underrepresented in the tourism sector. These female-led tours will be incorporated into several of our India trip itineraries, providing not only a lower impact mode of transport for travellers, but a chance to interact with the community and support economic empowerment for local women. Meet Joshua Mlay, Intrepid trip leader and mountain guide of 13 years on Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Joshua has followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Chagga tribe member Yohani Lauwo, who was the very first African guide to summit the iconic peak in 1889! 👣 “I keep on practicing my grandpa’s legacy, because every time I get up there, I feel a sense of belonging,” Joshua says. Through his career in travel, Joshua says he is able to create meaningful connections, not just with his grandfather, but with his entire community. “I believe in fostering a deep relationship with nature, promoting environmental sustainability, and respecting the local culture and communities that surround this majestic mountain.” 💚 Inspired by his story? Today I had the opportunity to take to the stage at the Skift Global Forum in New York for a fireside chat with Sarah Kopit. Sarah and I explored the pursuit of profit and purpose in business and how the two are intrinsically linked at Intrepid Travel – and part of our success story. It’s always interesting to use these moments to reflect on our journey and how our profit growth has accelerated since we became a certified #BCorp. I truly believe our style of small group, community-centric travel can be the answer to not only travel’s most pressing issues but its greatest opportunities. A huge thanks to Rafat Ali and the entire team for their ongoing support and for delivering another standout event. #SkiftLive #MoreIntrepidPeople
