“How is AUKUS changing the landscape for Australian critical minerals companies?” Rebecca Tomkinson, CEO of The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia challenged three of Australia’s leading mining executives.    National security and the energy transition are increasingly aligned objectives for Australia, the US, their allies and adversaries.   The critical minerals found in Western Australia go into clean energy technologies (e.g. wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles) and high-tech products. Boron and Boron compounds have a variety of important uses in EV transition, manufacturing and industry.   1. Electric Vehicles: FerroBoron used in production of high-strength steel alloys essential for EV automotive performance and components like car chassis. 2. Did you know that there are very few Australian mining companies that have received US Government funding for their critical mineral projects? Whether directed to AmCham Australia, the U.S. Embassy in Australia, US Consulates around the country or U.S. Commercial Service, questions on this topic have increased exponentially since the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was introduced in August 2022 and again in December 2024 when the United States Department of Defense amended DPA Title 3 to include Australia in its definition of domestic production. What will this mean for boron supply chain security given Turkey holds about 75% of global reserves? There is really only one large boron producing mine outside of Turkey and that is Rio Tinto's Boron mine in California. Ioneer Ltd.'s Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron project located in neighboring Nevada is construction ready and is expected to be fully permitted next month. Rhyolite Ridge contains approximately 13 million tonnes of boric acid and is ideally placed to provide secure, stable and sustainable supply to the large US market for the ensuing decades.
