In the lead up to our Stewards on the Couch event with David Mackie last year, IPAA Queensland Director, Andrew Wills, sat down with Professor Deborah Blackman who took to the couch to facilitate an insightful conversation with Queensland’s Public Sector Commissioner about leadership, public service, reform and the highs and lows of his own professional career journey. About us
Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) Queensland is the professional association for public servants across Queensland and anyone interested or engaged in public purpose work. IPAA’s mission is simple. We promote and enhance the professionalism, capability and integrity of public administration and pride in public service. We do this through a strategic program of events and thought leadership forums that enable our members to build their connections, challenge their thinking and stay informed about topics and issues relevant to public purpose. As a professional association, IPAA is uniquely positioned to bring people together from local, state and federal government and from private and not-for-profit organisations and universities who are engaged in public purpose work. As an independent, apolitical organisation, IPAA provides a trusted platform for important discussions and debates. IPAA is your professional association. Our priorities and agenda, shaped by your feedback, will prepare you for current and future challenges facing public administration. We will continue to evolve and look to expand our offerings in response to your interests and the ever-changing public sector landscape. Becoming a member of IPAA Queensland demonstrates your personal commitment to your career and to the profession of public administration. Membership offers you exclusive development and networking opportunities and connects you with some of the most active and influential people engaged in public administration and public purpose. If you’re a public servant or engaged in public purpose work, we encourage you to get to know and connect with IPAA Queensland.

"There's a saying that goes...you always have the opportunity to say no. But remember, if you exercise that opportunity, you may never get the opportunity to say, to say no again..." Wise words from Michael Walsh as he answered questions asked by Deidre Mulkerin at our Stewards on the Couch event a few weeks ago. We invite you to watch the clip here on LinkedIn about Michael's defining career moments. Want to watch the full video? It is widely believed that public policies should reflect the core desires and expectations of voting citizens. After all, it’s a key principle of #democracy that governments should enact the values of the community through their decisions, reforms, budgets, services and investments. In Australia, the idea of the ‘fair go’ has long been proffered as a typically and uniquely Australian value. But – what does this mean? How can public servants responsible for providing advice to governments, decide on how policy options support this core ‘Australian value’? We took a closer look at interesting research on this topic by researchers at Griffith Business School. https://lnkd.in/gsXT55CR #ipaainsights #ipaaqld2024 #buildconnections #challengeyourthinking #keepinformed Cosmo Howard Pandanus Petter

The use of #AI comes with unique risks and challenges for government agencies (particularly in the space of ethics and bias). Mitigating these risks and challenges is important, but possible, and will allow agencies to recognise these benefits. While the potential for efficiency gain is clear, there are inherent challenges to AI applications in the business of government. For example, regulatory and service delivery impacts must consider the potential for adverse impacts for both individuals and enterprises. So – how does the public purpose sector approach this transformation in digital capability while also being diligent to ensure its responsible use? This event, being held on the 10th October at 1 William Street, will see an esteemed panel of leading speakers come together to share insights and perspective on both the opportunities and the challenges of leveraging AI across the Queensland Government. An essential event for anyone interested in artificial intelligence and its broad reach and depth, and those wanting to understand more about dealing this technological innovation. We could not have put it better ourselves. Last night our Stewards on the Couch series delivered one of its most memorable, as Director-General of Queensland Health Michael Walsh sat down with our President Deidre Mulkerin. This 'steward on steward' format saw two of the state's most respected public leaders delve into the DG's career highs, lows and learnings. With practical wisdom, humility and authenticity, he showed us what a truly diverse and meaningful public purpose career can look like. There were deep insights, laughs and some unexpected performances. We encourage you to keep an eye out for more from this fantastic session soon. In the meantime, enjoy the summary below (with thanks to Mike Kaiser).
Public servant? Need a role model? Michael Walsh DG Health is mine. Last night on the IPAA couch he showed us his wit, wisdom and whimsy. Some of my takeaways: 💎 Frank and fearless doesn’t mean belligerent and combative. 💎 Back yourself. Take a risk. What you learn will hold you in good stead. 💎 Don’t fear moving around. Learn to rely on your core bag of skills. 💎 Really listening helps with recall. 💎 Delegating well means trusting people, letting go, but being there to help them. 💎 Saying no might mean you may never get the chance to say no again. 💎 Character is like chicken soup stock. No matter what the other ingredients, without good stock, your soup won’t taste good. 💎 Have fun. Sing Kenny Rogers, dance the floss and detach sometimes. Love your work Michael. Thank you for saying yes (again). And thank you to IPAA Queensland for humanising another DG. #publicserviceisaverb
