When I look back on starting my career at KPMG six years ago, it often feels surreal. In 2017, I’d completed my Bachelor of Business in accounting and finance and had secured a role somewhere else. I’d been there for under a year and was content. I enjoyed the work and was grateful for an opportunity in my field of study, but a senior leader took the time to tell me that I should think bigger. He saw potential in me and gave me the push I needed to think critically about what I wanted to achieve in my career. I asked myself: How do I want to grow personally and professionally, and where is the best place I could do that? I’d heard a lot about KPMG at uni but honestly, having a career at a big consulting firm seemed like a bit of a pipedream. I decided to take the leap. I chose KPMG because of the network and opportunities that it brings and I haven’t looked back since. In my first year, I learned more than I could have imagined. From hearing partners speak to working directly with clients, every day was a learning experience. I’m grateful for brilliant and supportive colleagues who’ve helped me grow. Today, I’m a manager, working on one of our biggest audit clients in the financial services sector. I also have a role on the Audit & Assurance People Advisory Board. I enjoy working closely with grads to help them see their potential, just like someone did for me. I see it as paying it forward. https://bit.ly/43KBJW8

I moved to Australia with my partner just over a year ago. He is from France, and I am from Sweden and we both work in Audit in Sydney. At the time, we knew we wanted to explore a different lifestyle, so the thought of living in Australia was very appealing given the nature and weather it offers compared to Sweden. I’ve learnt to embrace the change with an open mind and a positive attitude and that has been crucial. Leveraging support networks has also been essential. Opening up to people around me on my experience in relocating and utilising the support systems available was an important part. I quickly found myself surrounded with a lot of people in a similar position, which made the transition so much easier. On a personal level, my move to Australia has been great, but on a professional level it’s given me a lot of opportunities. It was tough at the start as you’re basically relearning different ways of working, and processes, but the team has been very welcoming, and I have a great support network around me. It took a while to come out of my shell but once I found my space that made adjusting to things easier. My advice for anyone else considering a move is to go for it. For me, when we were thinking about moving, and doing something different with our lives, we didn’t think it was possible. I’m sure a lot of people think this way, especially such a big move to Australia, but I am so happy to have taken that opportunity. And if you have that background and experience, you can feel confident as the organisation has been so supportive and there are so many others who have taken the same journey. https://bit.ly/4hIvpSh

The most rewarding aspect of my experience at KPMG Australia since making the big move from KPMG in the Netherlands has been the opportunity for personal and professional growth through diverse experiences and challenges. Living in Melbourne with my partner has allowed me to embrace a new culture, enjoy and engage in local sports like footy and the F1, and I am about to compete in my first triathlon – something I certainly would never have taken up if I hadn’t been here. I’ve also attended a wedding in Darwin, and seeing that part of Australia was magical. Professionally, the smooth transition facilitated by KPMG’s support network, including assistance with immigration and local integration, has enabled me to hit the ground running and supported me achieving key milestones such as completing my Dutch Chartered Accountant equivalent. Working within Audit with such a diverse set of Australian clients has provided unique opportunities that have broadened my expertise and enhanced my career trajectory. Overall, I am grateful for the welcoming environment and people here in the Melbourne office. The chance to join various like-minded teams and initiatives and make great friends at KPMG Australia has made my move incredibly fulfilling. For anyone considering an international move, I would recommend doing it. It is a clichéd expression, but it really is a fantastic opportunity for personal growth. In my early career I was fortunate to spend two months in Singapore, and from then on I knew I wanted to find another overseas opportunity. Despite inherent challenges, it has been a wonderful experience with many rewarding moments. It is not every day you move 16,000 kilometres down under, but there is so much that comes from it. https://bit.ly/4hIvpSh
