Leaf Architecture is an architecture studio with a love of design, people, learning and community.
About us
Leaf Architecture is a boutique architecture practice with a love of design, people, community and the learning environment. Based in the Inner West, we have immersed ourselves in one of Sydney’s creative precincts with a view to establishing ourselves as a design firm with a functional edge. Although the breadth of our work is broad, our specialisation is the learning environment, comprising schools, early learning centres and tertiary facilities. We maintain this specialisation by our continual research into the current and future trends of learning delivery models. This research, coupled with our experience offers unique benefits, such as our understanding of capital works funding, working with operational environments and most importantly, practical applications of pedagogies. We strongly value research into Teaching and Learning as it is one of our cornerstone approaches to our practice. At Leaf Architecture, we believe that all decisions should be based on research and should have a learning strategy embedded at its core, to enable the continual improvement of learning outcomes for the students. Through this strategy, we can then work with you to design the “third teacher” - namely the learning environment. The experience of our director, Daniel Smith, combined with our passion advancing the learning environment provides schools with an interesting design framework, comprising of Process, Challenge and Outcomes. Our design process has been refined over the past fifteen years to maximise engagement and understanding with the goal of lifting learning outcomes. Designing the learning environment is our passion, working with educators to design a space that reflects their pedagogy is our purpose.

Here’s the pitch folks: I want to help as many people as possible feel more confident and competent in navigating the world with AI. I can do other things too 😏 but AI is a core need and a core service I can provide. I don’t just want to talk to the techies. 🤖 they’re probably OK with AI, but I want to talk with those who are scared as much as those who are excited. I don’t just want to work as a one off spray-and-pray presentation and disappear 💨 it’s inspirational, but not sustainable. I can work with whole staff, teams and groups, and even individuals. We can design what you need. We’ll have thought-provoking conversations, dispel myths, and uncover opportunities in whatever forum we create. I’ve founded The Next Word to help drive the next phase of exploration. No one can promise where it’s all going to go, but I can promise to explore it with your values and mission to guide us. The Next Word will partner with exciting, ethical and engaging partners to make this happen and amplify the educational landscape. AI is here already. The Next Word is here now. If you’d like to talk more, send a message or email me at matt@nextwordnow.com Please share as widely as you can. I appreciate it! www.nextwordnow.com

The newly refurbished common room for students in the Upper School of Pymble Ladies’ College (Year 9 and 10) is a beautiful space that helps to promote kindness and inclusivity. A variety of different zones have been created for socialising and study. Student wellbeing is enhanced through light and bright interiors that use natural materials and have a strong connection to nature. Pastoral care and passive supervision were important aspects of the design, achieved through strategically locating staff office areas so that they have clear lines of sight to student areas and are accessible to students. All offices for staff have been positioned to maximize outlook, fresh air and sunlight. The character of the existing building has been celebrated in the design through referencing the existing window arches in the seating nooks. Choice is important for student agency, which leads to greater student engagement in learning. In the library at Bethel Christian School, students have a choice of spaces to inhabit while learning. Either by themselves, in a small group or in a larger class group. “The value of our knowledge multiplies when we share what we know with others.” - Simon Sinek, author and inspirational speaker. Dads can be a great source of knowledge. In honour of Father’s Day this weekend, we asked the Leaf team, “...what is something useful you learnt from your dad (or a father figure in your life), that you have adopted in your adult life?” Here is some of what they had to say. #FathersDay #KnowledgeIsPower #ParentingTips #Education

The refurbishment of Avonmoore Boarding House at Pymble Ladies' College has created a beautiful ‘home away from home’ for Year 7 students. Pops of colour, timber finishes, plants, soft textures and zoned lighting all combine to create a place where students feel relaxed and where they can socialise with their friends. The ground floor of the existing building contains bedrooms for the students, a staff sleeper, and an office. Level 1 contains the student kitchen, dining area, lounge and chill out areas and bathrooms. A functional and beautiful space has been provided for them to cook together, share food and relax, along with a common room that enjoys views to the tree canopy outside and is flooded with sun light. Outdoor recreation areas at the front and the back of the boarding house provide students with places to connect with nature. Overall, Avonmoore aims to be a welcoming place for students and their parents, in the first year of Boarding at Pymble. After attending a recent Learning Environments New Zealand Education Architecture Conference in NZ, we recognised that Cultural Touch Points are an integral part of NZ architecture. Our buildings can become symbols of our culture, values and how we see ourselves, which is important in creating a sense of belonging. #LSA2024 #ILE #education #LEA #LearningEnvironmentsAustralasia #newzealand #NZArchitecture #culture #schooldesign #architecturelovers

Last Friday, we were excited to participate with Learning Environments New Zealand in the Aotearoa conference. With a keynote from Dr Julia Atkin, underlying teachings of basing design decisions on research learnings through to the cultural narratives interwoven through all public buildings, we’re inspired! #LSA2024 #wellbeing #design #learningspaces #ILE #education #architecture #learningenvironments #LEA #LearningEnvironmentsAustralasia

FIVE KEY THINGS TO CONSIDER when Briefing Architects How can you ensure a successful collaboration with your architect? Here are five essential elements to include when briefing to create a space you'll love. 1️⃣ Functional Requirements. Share your space needs (rooms, uses, etc.) – it's like giving the architect the script for your dream play. It ensures they understand how you'll use the building, allowing them to design functional and efficient areas. 2️⃣ Long-Term Vision. Let the architect know how you envision using the space in the future. Think of it as future-proofing your investment with an adaptable design. 3️⃣ Dislikes. Don't just say what you like – dislikes are valuable too! Share any strong feelings about design elements (open floor plans, materials) to help them tailor the design to your taste. It's like giving them a list of ingredients you don't want – they can still create a delicious dish (design) while avoiding those flavours (elements) you dislike. 4️⃣ Company's Approval Processes. Explain your company's decision-making process. Who approves the design? Are there multiple layers of approval? This ensures a smooth and efficient approval process. 5️⃣ Budget. Be upfront about your budget – it's the roadmap! Knowing your financial constraints helps the architect prioritise features and materials within the design to achieve your goals. #schooldesign #architecturelovers #schoolarchitecture #educationarchitecture #learningenvironments #briefing #DesignProcess

Glass operable walls between classrooms is often a hot topic of discussion in the design of schools. Its the balance between putting learning on display and supervision with potential distractions. Either way, the end result often mimics the working environment our learners will see during their career. Feedback can point towards personal preferences from both students and teachers around the use of glass however there is a general consensus that there needs to be a balance of solid vs. transparency to achieve: ✔️ Create community of learning through visual connections between spaces ✔️ Encourage collaboration ✔️ Reduce distraction ✔️ Facilitate a sense of student agency ✔️ Enables passive supervision ✔️ Purposeful learning displays Would love some feedback on the use of glass operable walls in your school. Darren Cox, Matthew Esterman 🧔🏻, Greg Miller, Vivienne Awad, Adam Larby what are your thoughts on this topic?
