Empowering adult survivors of child sexual abuse and trauma to reclaim their bodies and rewrite their stories.
About us
Left Write Hook is a peer led recovery and empowerment program that combines expressive writing and trauma informed boxing to help adult survivors of child sexual abuse and complex trauma reclaim their bodies and rewrite their narratives. Left Write Hook is a registered charity with DGR status. Alongside the charity, sits a powerful documentary film that spurred out of a research project within the University of Melbourne. The documentary follows eight survivors as they embark on the program of Left Write Hook. What unfolds is a collective journey of resistance, empowerment and re-creation as the survivors move from the privacy of the boxing gym into the public sphere. The personal becomes the political as the survivors begin to reauthor their lives. The film will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August 2024. Left Write Hook has a book of survivor stories available on Amazon and published through Loving Healing Press, USA. Check out Left Write Hook: Survivor Stories from a Creative Arts Boxing and Writing Project. Please visit our website for program information and to express your interest in our next programs or join our mailing list. We are growing from strength to strength as we seek to empower the lives of those who have been disempowered by abuse.

"Left Write Hook was life-saving" Elle* is a survivor of grooming, institutional and spiritual abuse, and gendered violence. She began her recovery journey in late 2022, when confronted with a significant trigger that made continuing to repress the abuse impossible. Left Write Hook enabled Elle to reconnect with her love of writing, to begin finding a way to safely exist in her body, and to find community and support by connecting with other survivors. Elle says that for her, Left Write Hook was life-saving. Since completing the program, Elle has trained up to become a program facilitator and uses her experience to help other survivors in their healing journeys. We never cease to be humbled by the opportunity to play a small part in the lives of the victim-survivors that participate in our program. It is the highest honour to be trusted with their stories and vulnerability. *Name has been changed

A writing prompt for today in honour of Children's Week: Today, my inner child needs... To get started, grab your journal and a pen, set a timer for 3-10 minutes, and write without stopping until the timer goes off. Try to let go of self-judgement. Whatever comes up in your writing is valid and unique to you. If you like, you can share some of your writing, or tell us what your inner child needs today, in the comments below 👇

Did you know that 28.5% of people living in Australia have experience CSA? This equates to almost one in three girls, and one in five boys.* Today marks the beginning of Children's Week. This year's theme is "Children have the right to a clean and safe environment". We couldn't agree more. *Australian Child Maltreatment Study, 2023

The writing that emerges from our workshops is so uniquely powerful. Giving survivors an opportunity to reclaim their voice and rewrite their stories is what Left Write Hook is all about. The first cohort of Left Write Hook participants, which is the same cohort featured in our documentary, generated a huge volume of writing that was compiled into a book. We have a link in our bio if you're interested in getting your own copy 📖 We are hoping to create more publications of participant's writings in future, and potentially publishing a series of limited edition books from each workshop we run. Is this something you would be interested in? Let us know in the comments below👇
