🎉 Congratulations to Centre members Dr Cassandra Pattinson and Dr Ruihong Qiu who have each secured a highly prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).   Dr Cassandra Pattinson's project will improve understanding of the impact of artificial and environmental light on children’s sleep, cognitive function and wellbeing.    Dr Ruihong Qiu will develop dynamic machine learning technology to support user decision-making on platforms such as e-commerce websites.  The University of Queensland More info - https://lnkd.in/d2b6sycw

Life Course Centre Research Retreat 2024   This week, Centre members from across our four Australian university nodes gathered for two incredible days.   It was an essential event to bring together our researchers, along with key stakeholders, who are all engaged in addressing deep and persistent disadvantage in Australia.   It was two full days of incredible sessions including expert and cross-discipline panel discussions, brainstorming breakout sessions, grand challenges discussions, as well as skills development and new ideas sessions. A new strategy will guide work over the next five years to support 460+ #ChildAndFamilyHubs 🌈 across Australia 📑 https://bit.ly/3Ak1qAr #Hubs provide a local, welcoming ‘front door’ for families to access the care they need, all in one place. At Hubs, families connect with services and support in health, education and social care. Families can also build new social connections at their local Hubs. The #NationalChildAndFamilyHubsNetwork unites service providers, community-based organisations, advocates, researchers and policymakers to build the capacity of Hubs. Following strategy consultation with a diverse cross-section from 950+ members, the Network has identified six priority areas for action:  ⭐ Invest in the National Child and Family Hubs Network ⭐ Secure long-term funding to support Hubs ⭐ Build workforce capability and culture ⭐ Use evidence to inform Hub implementation and evaluation ⭐ Develop and implement an advocacy plan ⭐ Partner with, learn from and support Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations The Network is collaborating with the many organisations working in Hubs settings and people attending Hubs to bring the strategy to life. Harmony is one of a group of young people from Anglicare’s youth homelessness and youth justice services who contributed to Hanging by a Thread, a photovoice project and ongoing pop up exhibition that encouraged young people to explore their experiences of home and homelessness through their own photography. Harmony’s photo of a mess left on a table after eating reveals an understanding of ‘home’ as somewhere that, unlike the strict rules of shared or transitional housing, mess is accepted because it signals a sense of belonging and return:  "In your own home, you don't have to worry about the mess. You have your own rules. This is your home. You don't have to leave or be moved on. You will be back here again later, and the mess can wait until then for you to clean it up."
