🚶♀️➡️ A short walk for a cure I'm taking on the Cancer Council NSW 7 Bridges Walk on Sunday 20 October 2024 again 🙂 However this time it means even more than last year... Every year in Australia, more than 165,000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed ‼️ Approximately 5-10% of these cases will be caused due to a faulty gene 🧬 Turns out I have one of these genes 👎 Only 1% of the population carries these genes, and my family hit a very rare and not fun jackpot! My mum, sister, two brothers and I all have a faulty gene (BRCA1) putting us at a much higher risk of developing cancer over our lifetime. My personal risk is 80% for Breast Cancer and 40% for Ovarian Cancer 😵 I have some difficult decisions 🙃 ahead to prevent a cancer diagnosis however I have seen and experienced the advancements in genetic testing, research and treatment over the last 12 years with my parents both surviving and beating cancer multiple times and the fundraising actually makes the difference 💰 🌼 Every step counts because all funds raised will help Cancer Council work towards the vision of a cancer free future. And we’ve done it again!! We are delighted to have brought the super Women in Rail + Friends together for an evening of sharing stories and wine. We started off with just a small core crew, growing a little bit each time and organically. Fast forward to yesterday and my goodness have we multiplied!!
